Maxima? Honda Accord? Honestly FWD is better than RWD in Chicago year round driving.

When did Saab 9-3's get three rear seatbelts? Or did they at all?

I'm fairly sure they all did.

Infiniti G20 for small version, i30 for little larger.

If truck-like the Infiniti QX4 (rebadged Pathfinder) or
Isuzu Rodeo which was sold new until 2005

Seriously? Huge depreciation and no one has mentioned the Korean twins yet? So disappointed in you peoples.

Here's the quick list:

2000-2005 Accents. Doesnt matter, just pick one. 00-01 had the SOHC 1.5 with 93hp. the 02-05 had the 110hp DOHC 1.6. same block, different heads. Both stupid dependable, cheap to fix when they break and use Civic/Miata wheels/tire sizes both in bolt pattern and in sizes.

2002-2006 Elantra. Autos are kinda soul sucking because auto. 5-spds are entertaining. Go through the suspension with some KYB's, H&R's and a rear sway bar and enjoy a fun, decently quick car that will run for eons. Check for rust.

2004-2009 Kia Spectra/Spectra5. Skip the LX/EX and go straight to the SX. It's marginally better in suspension, but you get better wheels/brakes right off the bat.

If you've got a little more cash to spend, look for the 2010-11 Forte's. Even the 2.0L (150hp) was decent and are really reliable/cheap and have a crap ton of features no car for $6k should have.

In the south there is no such thing as a cheap and reliable pick up. If it is usable it is 4 figures.

If you're going to be stuck in perpetual traffic the automatic isn't a bad idea.

I almost included the avalon with the ls400, but it doesn't get more vanilla. The avalon's tagline should be "Buicks wish that they could be this boring"

(otherwise I second the Saab 93 idea)

My Maxima was awesome in Chicago. A base RSX can be had in the 5-7K price range and last for a quarter million miles and it is a good drive and easy to park. Prelude can fit in there too.

I'll second the Saab idea too. Fun and comfortable to drive.

I said, no GM FWD. Meaning I don't want a Park Avenue or a Grand Am. F-body would be interesting.

As the owner of a Z28, I assure you that a V6 model would NOT be interesting. The V8 drivetrain is the only part of the car that doesn't suck out loud.

Around here you can find LS1 cars in your price range, and you can find 4.6 Mustang GTs all day for that. A 4.6 Mustang may not be the best car ever, but they're tough.
