My buddy just got rid of his newer M2 because he hated the stress of tracking it, and the depreciation. He asked me the same question- low budget, fun car, no Miatas. After running through 7 or 8 options, he’s now shopping Miatas. Dunno.

I was actually thinking they were relatively high-priced compared to miatas and other comparable sports cars....maybe they're still too new to hit beater-status?
5k can easily land you an RX-8 with a rebuilt engine or healthy compression on an "older" motor.
You can probably get into one cheaper if you're willing and able to rebuild a rotary engine yourself. Lots of RX-8s with engines needing rebuilds in the 1k range. You can easily rebuild it yourself with about $1500-2000 in parts.
Also, there are a lot of RX-8s out there that have "bad engines" but don't... and you're an ignition upgrade/starter replacement/battery replacement away from getting it working again. I think it has to do with the stigma of rotary engines, as soon as theres a problem, lots of uninformed owners think they need an engine replacement when they don't. Buyers often times skip on these buys because they also assume the worst.
The car actually can fit medium sized adults in the backseats comfortably - More so than any other 2+2 car I've come across.

My MR-S was 6k many years ago. Had a bad history but it was a great car. Deals on them are out there but if you want a hard top, no chance. Too few sold initially with them. I really liked it but unless one drops in my lap for a great price, I will likely go with something I haven't owned already.
Quest complete! I am bringing this 1988 S/C MR2 home in a few weeks. I went and test drove it last week and while it needs a few alterations I fell in love with it.
AWESOME! Did you see the red SC that just sold on BAT? It went quite high, and had 200k on the chassis.

I'm glad it is going to a good home. You will love it!

I was watching that car as well. It went for crazy money. Looks like a collector bought it.
In reply to JamesMcD :
I had not seen that. Crazy. Your MR2 is worth some dough then.
I have no plans to flip this car but that will certainly make my wife happier. I told her that it was likely to never be worth less than what I paid for it. This only proves that.
