My late-twennysomething female friend aquaplaned in the rain we had last weekend and totaled her '03 Corolla automatic. She drives about 60 miles a day commuting. She's about 5'5" 110 pounds and has no sporting interest at all. Needs a commuter replacement. So we're looking at reliable, fuel efficient, cheap and an automatic. She's basing the $ available on the re-financing per month so I don't know how much is actually available. Let's assume $5K to $7K available if she buys outright with help from her Mom. I did a local search and found a few late-naught Camrys and 2011 Impalas. I'm assuming Ford/Chev/Toy/Hon as the brand options and looking for validation from The Hive. Go.

+1 The Mazda 3's seem pretty good for this.

Is there not a decent Prius in that price range? This seems exactly what they are designed for.
