I'm averaging 29 US MPG on my stock '97 on my 15 mile commute (each way), mostly highway, 65 mpg. Fuel mileage TANKS at higher speeds. After having a few cars that use 91 octane, it's nice putting the cheap stuff in.

Just backing me up. You ain't getting that mileage out of a Miata without some work.
I'm seeing used Volts in the mid 20s. They have an HOV sticker which may come in handy... Isn't GRM doing some sort of article on that car???
GRM already DID one article on it. I posted a whole thread about how much i liked the article.
SAAB 9-5. 2003 Linear Model, sedan, 200 lbs of human and about 400lbs of stuff, and I would get about 35-36mpg doing 65-70 (cruise set, but often adjusted), and about 32-33mpg doing 80.
Just get a 99-03 VW TDI. It is a chore to get the MPG down as low as 35 with one! I have only hit MPG that bad once in a TDI and that was climbing the top of the world highway in the Yukon Territory at 2x the speed limit with a lifted 98 New Beetle TDI on big BFG mud terrain tires. My 91 GTI with a TDI swapped in has seen as low as 52 with the cruise set at 90 across the very windy I-80 in Nevada.... otherwise it gets over 60 MPG on almost every tank.

The lease deal was too good to pass up - especially considering that I can now get an HOV sticker. 
The car drives pretty nice. Surprisingly nice.

Seriously though, good pick. A wee bit more than $4K, but as you say, the leases on those and the pure electrics are just nuts good right now.

Yes they are. Last month's gas cost was $430. This should offset that. Plus with the HOV sticker, I should gain back ~1/2 hour a day in commute time - and that makes me happy.
