So, I might be moving to Wyoming and will be needing a new vehicle. They have real winter there and awd seems to be necessary and I don't like Subaru's or the German brands.

It will be in the Basin, WY area

Wants:

Manual

Awd

25+mpg

under $35K new or cpo

Evo X should fit the bill. On my admittedly slow commute (lots of open road at 50-60mph), I'm getting close to 30mpg in my MR.

Mind you, their dealer network is a bit thin. I probably wouldn't buy another one unless I had a dealer closer.

Yeah, Evo is the only thing I can think of really.

Wasn't the Mazdaspeed 6 awd?

So I would be remiss if I did not suggest something from Sweden, so I have 2 suggestion.

2012 Saab 9-3 Sedan AWD 2.0L, 4 cyl, Manual 6-spd, Turbo, Regular Gasoline and 20 City / 24 Combined / 30 Highway

Then after that maybe a 2010 Volvo S40 AWD, 2.5 L, 5 cyl, Manual 6-spd, Turbo, Regular Gasoline and 20 City / 22 Combined / 27 Highway

Nice finds on the Saab and Volvo. Also check the Infinti G35x but I don't think the x (AWD) comes with a manual trans. The RWD version did.

RAV4's used to come in AWD and manual, my wife has one. Just looked at new ones and apparently there are no manuals even for the FWD version. I guess that is the way things are going. The new ones only get 29 MPG anyhow.

Finding an AWD,manual Gt will be a chore, but they do exist. Autos are far more common.

Celica Alltrac

You could probably get a used Quattro of some sort (80s and early 90s before the electronics went batE36 M3 crazy) or an Evo..Galant VR4..DSM..

Vibe's came with manual trans but if you chose awd then they only came with auto.

The Power Search function of www.fueleconomy.gov brings up the following:
Mini Countryman All4 (the huge Mini)
BMW 320i/335i x-drive (cool but pricey)
Jeep Compass/Patriot
Suzuki SX4
Saab 9-3 awd
Saab 9-2 (could be a good choice for someone against Subaru )
Chevy Tracker/ Suzuki Vitara
Volvo S40/v50
Hyundai Tuscon/ Kia Sportage
Earlier Rav4's
Early Ford Escape/ Mazda Tribute
Eagle Talon/ Mitsu Eclipse

A whole lot of Subarus and Audis.

Saturn Vue comes with Manual but only as fwd. Awd dictates automatic.

You can also look at a Mazda 323 GTX.

I would personally throw snow tires on a RWD car like an E36, E46, or a Camaro and start practicing on drifting.

Eh? EH?

Manual maybe not available. Might be one of those stupid auto shifters that they try and make look like a manual shifter for whatever reason.

How are you 25 with a 35k budget?

If you can find one! And those have reached WW2 fighter status in terms of finding parts.

If he's been out of college for 4 years and has had a decent job during that time, he's making more than enough money to afford 35 bi-turbos.

Well that cuts all of the decent cars currently available.

Well, luckily if you buy used you'll probably get a good deal on whatever you find since likely the majority of people don't want it.

There aren't a whole lot of dealerships in Wyoming. Or cars. Or people for that matter.

My point is be careful with what you pick. If you get some esoteric, limited production or really old car you'll find it difficult to find parts and people that can work on it locally.

That'll leave you ordering everything you need from the web, waiting for it to arrive and then installing it yourself. No big deal if you have multiple cars, but if you only have one, that's an issue.

Honestly I'd buy an American pick up truck. When you leave Wyoming, sell it there.
