I am looking to replace spouses 07 rabbit 2 door with a 4 door wagon type car. I really want to get an A3 but they are more than I want to spend. The other though was a subaru impreza wagon, saw one of those the other day and that was pretty sweet looking with a set of wheels and springs.

  1. 4 door
  2. wagon body
  3. manual or flappy paddle
  4. under 60k miles
  5. price under $15k
  6. mpg 25+

Any ideas?

Impreza's are nice car's but your really don't need AWD in Florida. It's just extra weight. Don't they make Bmw 330 wagons? Not sure on the price though.

replacement parts on BMW are no more expensive than normal cars.. unles you are into M cars.. the specialised parts on them are expensive.

I went from a 1st gen Hyundai tiburon to a BMW 318ti.. parts of the Bimmer were cheaper than the Hyundai

Dont laugh but a PT Cruiser GT would be a great choice. They can be found cheap and have the same drivetrain as the SRT4. They are usally owned by older people and as a result are well taken care of.

sounds like a good idea but there is no way i would ever be able to get her to drive it, she would rather keep the rabbit i'm pretty sure.

I had a 2002 325iT and loved it. Manual transmission, sport package. Dead nuts reliable, great online parts support, a joy to drive, etc, etc, etc. Would buy another one in a heartbeat. Sold it last year. Excellent condition, 100k miles, $10k.

jonnyd330 asked " how is the mazda 3? rear leg room? quality interior parts? rattles? "...

Our experience ('09 Mazda 3 GT) was the rear seat leg/foot room was small - our teenager son (size 10 shoe) wasn't able to fit his feet under the front seats (car had upgraded Bose stereo). After one year we sold it, and bought a '06 Mazda 6 wagon. We had zero issues with interior quality and rattles in 35k miles...

The styling is definitely polarizing. While the grill isn't my favorite, I'm on the side of liking it. For those who don't, there's always the previous gen car, which was more conservative.

E46 wagons are great, parts are reasonably priced and have great availability. We got my mother a 2002 325xiT 5 spd 1.5 years ago for $6k with 140k. A few $ in bringing maintenance up to date and it has been a great, reliable, nice car.

Mazda3 is another great choice. We have one of these too, 2007 with 103k, only done fluids, shocks, and one set of brakes and spark plugs, it is fun to drive and has been getting 30 mpg average in mixed driving lately after having the 100k service.

I fit fine in the back of either, as long as the seat isn't all the way back, 5'11".

Will the BMWs return 25+ mpg? The 325 is showing about 24mpg on Fuelly

The WRX won't. The Mazdaspeed 3 won't. The Impreza likely won't. The B5 S4 won't.

Unless you guys drive 100% highway, the 25+ number is going to knock all of these cars out of the running.

JohnnyD, did you mean 25+ average city+highway or 25+ highway only? The first is going to be tough, the second opens a world of possibilities. ;-)

Yeah your probably right but I am just trying to keep the mpg similar to what we are getting in the rabbit now. Which is closer to 22 average so most of these cars would be fine, unless there is a better option?

Volvo V50 T5.

Turbo 5-cylinder goodness. Mazda/Ford Euro Focus underpinnings. We put my wife in a used fwd '08 T5 w/ Premium package (leather/HID's/fancy 17's,etc.) and she absolutely loves it. (not my car in pic) Great use of space, easy to park in the city, and passes the stroller test (easy to close hatch and toss in back), and more premium feel than a Subie. A bit harder to find due to rarity, but that is a plus in my book as well (not seeing your own car everywhere). AWD available if you need it, manual trans as well.

Unless you're trying to get away from VWs, diesel manual shift Jetta wagon. The diesel will get you the best gas mileage out of any other car suggested so far. And as far as reliability, with the exception of the Subaru and Honda Fit, it would be the most reliable.

I used to average 22.6 over 30k miles in an e36 M3, so I would imagine the 325, having a smaller and lower power variant of the same motor and a similar chassis, should do better. Hell, my Z4M averages mid 21, and that has 330hp.
