Recently acquired a Protege with a full FM turbo kit...had no idea Flyin Miata even made turbo kits for this car. Not terribly interested in the car itself, but I'm wondering what other vehicles could utilize this kit. Appears to be a water cooled Garret T3 with a coated log manifold. I'm thinking miata??

Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't a Protege have the same engine as a Miata?

What year protege? You could put that whole shebang in an Escort, likely.

If it's really FM, it's pretty old. They've been using 2560's for the last several years. I bet Keith could throw some light on the subject. I'd be curious to know what engine it is as well, along with what more specifically the car is... The 1.8 BP twincam is a prettty good mill and the GTR variant is extremely knock-resistant, like 23psi on pump gas knock resistant. I think this thread needs pix.

They made one for the FS-DE 2.0L protege engine for a little while IIRC.

1G Protege LX has a BP05, so for all intents and purposes, yep!

Yup, it's a 2000 Protege, but curiously it looks like FM only made kits that were designed for the '01-03 models. Some digging revealed that this kit was installed in '03. I've emailed Keith for specs on the turbo. How do I know if it is a GT-R? Pics forthcoming this evening.

It's not because it's a 2000. It's an FS-DE. Unless someone was smart and swapped the motor.

Update: Found receipts that indicate the turbo and motor were both rebuilt in 08...doesn't look like it received any forged goodies

Pics! Back to the original question; any ideas what trim turbo this is, and what engines it might suit?

Bonus Pic: the dangers of improper heat shielding

Stock FS and FP connecting rods turn into paper clips under boost. Easily upgraded, but something to keep in mind if you keep the car.

I won't sugar coat it. That engine is a steaming pile of fresh dog feces.

Good evening, and welcome to another edition of 'Fecal Matters'.

I'm your host and moderator, Billy Rubin.

Tonight, we consider the curious case of the Protoge and the steaming pile of dog feces.

According to FM, it's T3 Super 60, .48 AR hotside, .42 AR coldside. As I recall, that was a fairly well loved turbo on miataturbo.net

That would look right in a ZX2.

The manifold won't be useful on anything else, but that turbo would be good on a BP or many Hondas.

I'm interested in that oil catch can if you want to sell it fairly soon.

You'll need to log in to post.
