My main qualm with the C4 is the dreadful interior, at least on the earlier models. That digital dashboard gives me nightmares. Other than that, I really don't mind the C4's design.

Was there a base model without the digidash? I’ve read you can get them fixed from a place on the internet, but it’s expensive
They all have digital dashes although the later cars are a lot more "rational" if you know what I mean (I mean "doesn't look like a prop from the original Tron").
This isn't going to be street legal in all 50 states, but it seems like a lot of quick can be added to Tuned Port Injected C4 by swapping the camshaft and going to a carb. Tuned Port seems awesome for a truck or a B-body or something, not a sports car. I know there are ways to improved the TPI for sporty use but a carb and an RPM Air Gap intake seems like the easy button.

Yeah, the 90's models updated the digital dash to something a lot less cringey.
TPI is garbage for the most part, but at its core it's still a small block 350, so the sky is the limit if you can sneak it through emissions/inspection (or if there are none in your state). Or you could install a modern EFI system from Holley or MSD and enjoy the wonders of modern engine management.

You can get full analog aftermarket dash but its pricey...+$1,000 iirc. Later models (1992 forward) had a nicer semi analog.
There are specialty compaenies that can repair early digital stuff but ain't exactly cheap ($250+).
Interiors aren't that bad really for the period. Main complaint are squeaks and rattles that are legendary...having recently completely gutted mine it's quickly understandable with the gazillion screws holding plastic on plastic parts together. And that plastic is now 30 odd years old and brittle. But there are cottage industries sell squeak repair kits for those that are OCD with a lot of time on their hands.
The TPI is double edged sword...long , small intake runners that choke down flow/horsepower makes the high torque.
I mean besides weight the SBC are cheap and easy to make power. So not really an issue in fact maybe a bonus to an older C4. Replace all the dash stuff with simply using an aim unit or tablet based digital dash. Interior wise I would probably do race seats and harnesses anyway

Read this: Cramit
OK, OK...I had missed the inside joke. Now that I know where it comes from, I start to see the humor.
