In anticipation of buying a new car, I've test driven a whole lot of stuff in the past month or so, let's recap (in the order driven).

'13 Mustang V6 PP - This was kinda disappointing. I have been interested in these since they came out in 2011. Finally drove one and was really underwhelmed. I'm sure it would be fun on the track, but otherwise it was like a rental car. I had a hard time coming to terms with the clutch as well, stalled it many more times than anything else I drove.

'13 Mazdaspeed 3 - Driving this made me want a hot hatch. Great power, competent chassis, etc. Just maybe not a MS3. I can't get over the joker grin, and the interior is kinda dated. If this car was based on the current gen I'd be sold.

'14 Kia Forte Koup SX - Misspelling aside, this is a pretty great little car. I drove it on a whim while a friend was looking at an SUV. Nice interior, slick shifter, good midrange punch from the turbo (same engine as the Veloster I believe). I thought the engine compared very favorably to the MINIs. I liked a lot of the exterior details as well, the LED trim in the headlights and taillights for example is pretty attractive at night. The one that I drove didn't have quite enough headroom due to the sunroof. Given the choice, I'd pick one of these over a Fiesta ST.

'10 & '11 MINI Cooper S - These seem like a pretty good bargain if you're not afraid of reliability. I was considering getting one with a CarMax sort of warranty so that I wouldn't have to worry too much. They're certainly fun to drive, the '11+ with the N18 was especially punchy. The shifter is a lot better than I remember from the R53. The miniature iDrive in the '11 was really frustrating. I didn't have any trouble figuring out the controls, but I couldn't find in the menu where to turn on bluetooth audio so that I could listen to Pandora. This is the only car where I haven't been able to do that straight away. The tiny amber screen in the '10 was even more awful.

'15 MINI Cooper S - It's almost like the MINI is becoming it's own tribute band. The F56 is a good car, it looks great in the right colors, the chassis is solid and well tuned, the 2L is punchy if a little underpowered compared to it's peers. But I feel like it's lost some of it's way, with the center speedo being gone, and the seats that look like they belong in a 3 series or something.

'16 Subaru WRX - I loved it, except it seems like it's always in "kill" mode. I found it very difficult to drive smoothly, as it would surge into boost so easily with the slightest tip of your toe (Car & Driver had this exact complaint). You would think that EyeSight® would have picked up on the fact that there weren't any cones around. The forward visibility in one of these is outstanding, way better than any other car that I drove by a long shot. These have a much nicer interior than the Impreza that I leased. I didn't push it too hard since there weren't any miles on it, but the chassis is very solid and confidence inspiring.

'16 GTI & GTI DSG - My favorite of all the cars I've driven so far. Nice interior, easy to use infotainment, easy to drive like a normal car. The 6 speed is so good that I wouldn't want the DSG, the only car that had a shifter that good was the Forte. When you push it, it makes all the right noises, and just goes without any drama. Compared to the MINI, I had my phone paired and Pandora playing before the salesman had time to make a copy of my license.

'14 Focus ST - Sadly I'm very critical of these after driving one. I guess the nicest thing I can say, is that it is better than the SRT-4 and the Cobalt SS. I wasn't impressed with the low-rent interior, although the seats and steering wheel were nice. It's definitely a hot-rod that reminded me of my dad's old Shelby Charger. Punch it in second, and you go whichever way bushing flex ends up taking you. I felt bad telling the salesman that I didn't really like it.

'16 Sonic RS - This is a cool little car. The salesman at the Chevy dealer where I looked at one of the MINIs was a car guy, so we were talking and the RS came up which turned into a test drive. The engine could be a bit hotter, but is certainly ahead of just about everything in this segment short of the Fiesta ST.

Sounds like you need a WRX with an electronic boost controller?

I dunno, I really love the GTI right now.

They're on my list if one comes along.

I work at a dual dealer Dodge/ VW and I have to say I have been surprised by the amount (25+) of 2014-2015 WRX/STI trade in with low mileage (five of them under 3K miles) on the Golf R. A few weeks ago we had nine WRX/STI traded in all of them for the Golf R, in less than four days. Having driven both of them I would buy the Golf R even though I had a realllly bad blow out with VW back in 2004.

I'm guessing those are mostly STis. I've been hard pressed to find any used 15+ WRXes that aren't reselling for MSRP.

That is odd. In 2011 I bought a '12 WRX for $500 above invoice. Contact some internet sales departments. If you are in socal try Subaru of Ontario.

I miss that car a lot and the new ones are much better cars. I drive a Mustang GT now and wish I never traded it in to be honest.

A tune should be able to help with that.

I drive a '13 Sonic LT non-turbo, and I did a lot of research on the entire Sonic line. The only negative thing about the RS is... since they did not choose to give the RS more motor than the LT Turbo, they made the RS quicker off the line by giving it a much steeper final drive than the LT Turbo.

That works for giving it more scoot off the line, but you pay for it on the top end. Cruising RPM are a lot higher, which makes it noisier as well as costing 6MPG highway.

If that's not a factor for you, fine. If it is, the LT Turbo, perhaps with some suspension and tire upgrades, may be a better choice.

That'd be a hilarious sleeper to rent for a weekend, but I can't see me owning one.

I'll keep that in mind if I run into anyone shopping for one. I wasn't really interested in the Sonic before or after driving it.

Probably, but then I could just start with the Forte or a MINI and have more stock than the tune would unlock.

I traded my '15 WRX in on a '16 Golf R. The R is probably the best all around "does everything" car I've ever owned.

My advise? Does it snow where you live? If so- WRX. If not- GTI.

Have you driven any of the previous gen GTi's to know how they compare to the new 2016? I can get a warranty for a lightly used one through my credit union and the asking prices for the 2013/2014's are pretty low.

I'd be curious to see if that generation is 90-95% of the car the 2016 is (for nearly half the price).

Also, have you considered the Si? That seems to fall in a similar category to your list above.

I haven't driven either just yet. I'll give a Mk6. a go next time I go shopping. As for the Si, I really like Ms. MCarp's '14 LX, but I'm afraid the K24 won't compare with the various turbo cars.

Yeah, awd elitism is very ironic when what we're trying to do here is settle for FWD.

I wouldn't touch the '10 Mini as the N14 is just too risky IMO. The '11 to '13 are really nice little cars.

I hear a lot of people complain about the "low rent" interior of the FoST. I have plenty of criticisms about my FoST, but I can't say that's one. At least in ST3 trim, I find it pretty nice for the price. The leather Recaros are very nice seats, wheel feels great, even though the software can be flaky the center touch screen is well located and well thought out, HVAC controls are simple and easy to use, dash plastics aren't the real hard cheap stuff that other economy cars have. Not saying it's deserving of a Lexus badge, but I don't have any issues with it.

I've test driven a Mk6 GTI, and my wife owns (and I've driven it a decent amount) a Mk7 GTI DSG. In my opinion, there's no one big thing that makes the Mk7 better, but all the little improvements really add up. I would hold out for the Mk7 over the Mk6.

As for winter, my wife got a set of smaller 16 or 17" steel wheels and winter tires for it, and had no traction problems at all this past winter.

You are correct; I was more referring to the family of cars in general, GTi vs WRX (also DoneBrokeIt talking about the trade-ins). The GTi is usually considered the better overall car than the WRX (in stock form) by most publications despite the disadvantage of FWD, but stepping up to the R vs STI for a more "performance-biased" car, I just can't get the "Wants" for anything Haldex. Everyday car with occasional spirited driving, sure, but I like going to track days and I don't think a Haldex car would tick the right boxes for me.

Vigo said: Yeah, awd elitism is very ironic when what we're trying to do here is settle for FWD. :P

It isn't elitism, one has a proper torque split and the other one doesn't

On the other hand, VW's interior have always seemed quite nice to me. The "meh" cars in the small-car bracket have stepped up their game big time but I would still give the edge to the VW's (granted I haven't sat in anything newer than about a 2014 or so).

I think the GTI PP comes with "half a Haldex"?

WingZombie wrote: I wouldn't touch the '10 Mini as the N14 is just too risky IMO. The '11 to '13 are really nice little cars.

Agreed. I liked the 10 better than the 11, but that is probably because it seems to me that Carmax tends to hand-pick the nicest examples, whereas the local Chevy dealer does not.

I think the one that I drove was an ST1, it had the tiny screen and the weird 90s nokia cell phone number pad. In my experience, it felt to me like they took a normal focus (which is a pretty common rental!) and put in a leather wheel and sport seats (I haven't checked out the Recaro option). I should add that I did appreciate the mini gauge stack. Really it comes down to "Other cars I've driven had nicer interiors".

Funny that you were seemingly more OK with the MS3 interior. I just finished shopping a lot of the same cars and ended up with a lightly used ST3 FoST. I LOVED the GTI interior - plaid seats especially - but couldn't justify the additional cost for a new car. I really liked the bluetooth interface too - just connect to my phone and let me use navigation through that. It makes so much more sense.

I agree, if the MS3 had the new interior, I would have bought one. The regular 3 was just not fun enough but that interior is so much nicer.
