What commonly available engine has the best exhaust note when opened up? I have always gotten a chuckle at the GM 60* V6 when the mufflers inevitably fell off some rando boy racers Grand Am, like a hillbilly Ferrari. Big LS Escalades and new Mustangs both sound amazing.
What engine makes you swoon?
1UZFE is said to be pretty awesome.
The flat crank V8 in the GT350 sounds pretty damn good. But I think noise-wise, my heart might just belong to the BMW S38. Something about the sound of big, high revving I6 breathing through ITBs is just awesome.
Best sound comes from V12 s. Second best is straight 6, then V8 and last the I4.
At least in my experience from the cars I have owned.

Porsche 911 motors in race tune make real happy noises. Love the coyote flat plane v8 sounds. I’m also partial to the wookie sound of the vw vr6 when opened up.

Honda J-series V6s make some cool screams
False.
The only correct answer is 5.0 fox body Mustang with flowmasters. Glorious.
Mazda KL V6 from ye olde Ford Probe, with high compression pistons & ITB's installed, revved to 9k+ rpm.
I know that sounds crazy but just trust me on this one.

While most 4 cylinder engines sound terrible when opened up, I do like the sound of a turbo Subaru with a good exhaust.

Also the flat plane Mustangs.
But I think my stock Fit sounds good...

This has been asked before and I stand by the VR6 as the answer. I’m biased as I have one but I had the 5.0 with flow masters in the Monster and it wasn’t nearly as good.
I recently listened to an opened-up LS for the first time, and man it really sounded incredible. It sounded like what you would imagine a NASCAR or an old Trans-Am car should sound like.
I've always been partial to the sound of a built VW flat four. Especially with an open exhaust.
I had a Z32 fly by me a few days ago on the expressway. I forgot how good the VG30DE sounds with an open exhaust.
Mercedes V12 with those "F1" headers.

Not terribly common though

It's probably just nostalgia, but in the late 60s I had a 56 chev 2 door with a 283 bored to 301 & 10:1's. Remembering the sweet sound of that Duntov fuely cam with those chattering solids still brings a tear to my eye.

I enjoy my mostly uncorked bmw m52b28, but not as much as the H6 swapped imprezza that used to rallyx w/ us.
One of the best sounding 4 cylinders still has to be the Fiat Twin Cam engine. It's big bore and semi-long throw gives it a deep burble at idle and low engine speeds, but it will quickly turn to the "tear silk" sound of the bigger italian engines once you get closer to red line. The Rods on the 2 litre are almost identical to the Chevy 350, yet it will scream upwards of 7000 RPMs if allowed
