I like straight and an X pipe which is what you will hear at the challenge. It’s sporting a factory H and flows right now though.
Anything that does not have straight pipes or Flo-Pro style empty cans. Best with Walker Dynomax turbo race mufflers.
One exception to the "straight pipes" rule- IHRA mountain motor pro stock cars. 800 inches at 8500 rpm works.
I think most modern Toyota VVT engines actually sound pretty good, but you rarely hear one that isn't behind OEM mufflers and intake.

The VFR is still one of my favorites. But I think the 98-01 with gear driven cams sound and rev better than the later 02+ vtec engines.
How many production engines came with gear driven cams?
