Ok, I know the Japanese cars are really good at being Legos when it comes to engines, suspensions, brakes etc. So, here is an early '90s Camry wagon, auto, 4-cylinder. 246K miles, but lots of new parts. Has a blown head gasket. My options (should I buy it) are replace the head gasket and have a winter beater/cargo vehicle, or drop a fun engine and manual trans into it, swap some suspension parts, and put sticky tires on it and have some fun. Oh, and the price is totally right. So what fits? Here's the link, by the way: http://scranton.craigslist.org/cto/2629768405.html
Any "S" block.
3sge. 3sgte. 5sfe. "5sge." "5sgte." "5sfte."
The worst part will be wiring.

I was waiting for benrik to show up.
I don't know where you're located, but I have a 180ish HP "Gen 3" 3SGE with ~30k miles on it for $400 w/trans...if you were interested. We ended up getting a later Gen 4 to use.

I'M NOT LISTENING. I'M NOT LISTENING....
Yea, I was looking for an engine I could score at the junkyard on one of their "$75 engine sale" days plus $60 for the trans.
Maybe I'll just replace the head gasket and swap a sweet built motor at a later date.
Did Toyota make a AWD version of this car? I know they did of the Tercel and/or Corolla...? THAT would be cool to swap in.

You need an 88-89 Celica GTS motor. 1st gen 3sge, 140hp. Should wake it up decently. Or get one of those AND a 5sfe from any 2.2 camry or celica, slap the 3sge head on the 5sfe, end up with 150-160ish hp.
Toyota did make an AWD variant called the AllTrac. It would be cool to swap in, but a lot of work. It won't just bolt up, there's many small differences.

Yes, for three years Toyota made a Camry AllTrac. It used parts from the 1st and 2nd gen Celica AllTracs, but used the standard non-turbo 5S-FE 4-cylinder in the "normal" Camry.
I had one, even had the locking center diff. I blew the motor and ended up sending it to the junkyard. Not a day I'm proud of, but the landlord got foreclosed on and I was out of time.

*3sfe, different geared and not as strong trans and center diff.
Yeah, Camry, Celica, MR2 have a lot of common DNA. 3SGTE would be sweet. Maybe 5VZFE with a TRD supercharger?

You're right on the 3S, not 5S... I was confused because I was gonna use a 5S block.
But I was almost certain that the transaxlefercase was shared with the Celica.

Nah, it's relatively puny compared to the Celica. It should still be ok to 250-300whp if treated correctly, but it won't hold "Sky's the limit!" like the Celica.

I thought he was actually making more power than that these days... i think i posted a few of his pictures in the hotlink thread a few weeks ago.
Here's an alternative route: The "S to MZ" swap has been done many times in Celicas... should be essentially the same in that camry.

Yeah. That happened.
First the escort topic and now this!?!? C'mon guys you gotta stop giving evil ideas
I think.... being that i'm the only common variable between the two topics....
I may have a problem.
If it helps you at all.... if i had to pick between the two topics, this one wins, hands down.
Everything about this potential project is more robust than the Escort will ever dream of.
I accidently reported the original post in this thread. Dang DROID screen!!!! Admins please ignore this I bumped the screen while moving my phone.
Nobody said 2GR? Did I miss something?
I have an Acquaintance from the AU that did the exact opposite.

There was an 89 All Trac Camry on Charlotte CL this week...for $500. It had a thirst for oil though.
I briefly considered it while shopping for my winter beater.

Doesn't come close to bolting in, but otherwise, approved!

Oh. I thought it was the same basic block with a whole lot of improvements. What is the earliest car it will bolt into?
