Did this a couple times before (Fox Mustang and Fox capri) and I'd do it again in a heartbeat:

That, ladies and gents, is a dirt cheap ex-station wagon 460. Bored .030 over and fitted with 10.5:1 pistons, ported '69 429/460 heads, Edelbrock intake/Holley carb, 429 SCJ cam, and headers. About $1500 in total.

well over 500 hp and 700 lb ft of torque in a car that was as easy to drive as a stock 5.0 in daily use. But press the loud pedal and it tended to flatten the eyeballs.

Unfortunately for the shift it yourself types, there really isn't much choice in manual trans that work behind the 429/460 (you can get adapter parts to use the Viper/s 6 speed, but you kinda need a huge budget to afford it). I used the wagon's C6 automatic with a bunch of B&M internal parts (clutch packs, modded valve body, and torque converter). With 2.73 rear end gears, first gear was good for almost 80 mph, and accelelration was still staggering.

Oh, BTW, this car was set up for autocross and track days...

A quick CL search found no less than 5 complete running 460/C6 combos under $350 around me...

+1 on the 460!

Having been unfortunately related to an '81 Fairmont Futura, I can say that "underpowered" does not even begin to do justice to the crappiness of that Ford 6 cylinder. Every time I opened the hood I had to count the plug wires to remind myself it wasn't some dinky POS 4-cylinder. That car would have been truly suicidal to drive with the base engine.

And yet, people are building very fast drag Falcons using that very same 200 cid engine. (the swap of the 200 cid out of a Fairmont into the early roundbody Falcon is fairly common).

There's a reason the most popular engine swaps have emerged as such: They are the simplest, cheapest, quickest, most reliable way to get on the road and enjoying your project. I don't mean to be the voice of boring in this forum full of wonderful ideas, but you could do a 5.0 implant in a weekend and, while more complicated swaps would be unique and awesome, if you want this thing to be a project to drive and not just perpetually work on, go with whats been proven to work and you can find lots of support for.

That said, and if you have the space to rebuild an engine, the 460ci lump sounds unreal. Maybe get the thing driving with a 5.0 while you build up a monster v8?

Thanks for the input guys, This car blongs to one of my clients, who has fallen victim to the ecomomy, its been sitting behind his whare house for months, and he is trying to sell the property. I know if I hit him at the right time he will say just come and take it away. He already tried to get me to take his bmw 1800 a couple years ago, but it was to far gone for me to save. A 460 is definitly out for my build, I am triying to make it lighter, more so than earth rotation alteringly powerful. the aussie dohc I6 sounds sweet, but out of my reach, unless I find an aussie falcon in the local pull-a-part. I will most likley wind up just dropping a 5.0 in it and selling it to finance the cage for my saab project, but I truely would love to make a more modern svo type fox body car.
