And I still have my GTI's original grille hanging in the garage. It was slightly tweaked when I bought the car–not cracked or broken, but it wasn't totally straight.
The kicker: Back then, at least, I was able to get a new Rabbit grille from our local VW dealer.
They only had one for a regular Rabbit, though, but I found some red/orange paint that was pretty darn close and painted the stripe myself. As I recall, I just sat on the curb at the office and did it.
