Drive it on top of the person you hate most, throw it in park, and rip the gear selector off. (Promptly call 911 afterwards)

Guarantees are great.
The place I worked had the engine in the tilt bed truck die. Owner said put a JY engine in it. Engine knocked like hell.
Oh well, it's guaranteed, we'll just get another one.

Sorry, around here "doghouse" means the nose assembly. Remove the fenders, inner fenders, and radiator support/grille. Takes no time at all and leaves you with easy access to everything.
I bought a beautiful knocking 96 astro at junkyard for $600. Dropped pan, found the bad rods by wiggling them. Got reman crank from partsvancezone and took the 2 bad rods to machine shop to get resized. Put it all together, worked fine. Will never do that again
Bet you can get a 4.8 or an lm7 for the same $$ not a " bolt in" bit would be fun and at less in MA you don't need an OBD test for the sticker so could even go carb
But back to your original question yes as others have said Junk yard motor is the way to go for the quick fix.

Earl-i in the morning...
Fix it up with a junkyard motor

before you sell it on craigslist.
Bought the thing on Saturday and had it towed home- it ran, but was clearly NOT a good idea to try driving it even the 2 miles back to my place. Will be starting a build thread on it later and hopefully tracking down a replacement engine very shortly. Thanks!

i do have an oil pan, motor mounts, and exhaust manifold/crossover setup to put an 86 and later small block into a 4X4 S series truck... from my googling over the last few weeks since i got my knocking blazer, i've come to the conclusion that a 96-99 vortec 350 damn near plugs right into the stock 4.3 wiring harness like it was meant to be there, with only 2 wires needing to be run to the injector harness plug...

As much as I personally like the idea of throwing a bigger, more powerful engine into the truck- and totally would were my intents for it different- in this particular case I'm of the mind that keeping it as close to stock as possible will be to my advantage.
The truck is going to be used as my winter beater for the next 6 months or so after hopefully the El Camino will be done and able to be used for parts hauling and anything that the D isn't well-suited for and I'll be looking to sell the Blazer. While being able to advertise it as having a 350 will certainly draw some attention, the problem is going to be that the demographic that would be likely to buy it because of that is a lot smaller than it would be with the same basic engine that it came out of the factory with for the simple fact it will be harder to get it worked on with a non-standard powerplant.

So, really the lesson learned here, is what the OP really needs to be asking is "what do you not do with a knocking blazer?"
