These are getting cheap. And they're perfect for me, even if they aren't a convertible. Except for the fact that the mpg sucks and the engine will blow up eventually.
But they are still cheap enough for me to look at. So here is my thought process: Buy one cheap. Drive it until the engine blows up. If it never does, great! If it does, then if you bought it right, it doesn’t matter. Say that I bought it, and the engine did blow up. What would you put in there in place of it? Lets look for something that will replace the same performance, be a more or less drop in swap (no V10 Viper engines), and be readily available. I’d be open to any suggestion, seeing as this is just an exercise in boredom at work and it has approximately 0.01237% chance of ever happening--I'm pretty well set on an E46 convertible.
I think the easy button is another Renesis.
The big issue is the CAN system the car uses. Pretty difficult to get all of the sub systems to work properly in the car with a swapped engine. I have heard that there was (1) company that cracked the CAN system. Not sure if they still exist.
If that doesn't matter... LSX.

4.8 truck engine, cam/valvesprings, FAST intake w/90mm TB tuned to run appropriately. Smallish displacement means good highway manners (30+mpg likely), short stroke means it'll rev (7500k rpm redline)and it should produce an easy 350whp/tq. More power. Better economy. Longevity to boot. The 4.8 is cheap ($300 at the local yard for a low mile unit), parts are readily available and it sounds cool.
If I had the fabrication skills to do it, I'd love to swap a DSM or EVO motor in. 4g63t or 4b11t, take your pick. An easy 300-400 hp/tq would be sweet in an 8. The problem has always been lack of RWD transmission options.
F2T and use the stock trans and rearend?
2.8l TT EFI V6 from a later Maserati Bitrouble!

Any government organization going to be peeking under the bonnet?
And as always, its cheaper to be on the lookout for and stockpile a spare Renesis than to perform any kind of a swap. Swaps are hard, they take a lot of time and nickle and dime you to death. Then you get to De-bug the thing. If you do manage to find a spare Renesis and keep it on the shelve, you just know the damn thing will run forever.
Renesis is the way to go. If you insist on unbalancing the car, then I'd go Lexus V8 of some flavor, at least that way you get a lightweight motor capable of some serious revs, much like the original design idea.

Swap F20C into RX-8, and Renesis into S2000...Embrace the hate.

I agree with the first half of this entirely.

I think that the LNX (?) is a sweet middle ground. Not as much weigh as an LSX and 300hp is a solid number for that chassis.
Gotta say a VQ37 would be fun. But im biased.
3800 V6 with Camaro transmission, turbocharged of course.

I'd guess closer to 450, but yeah, that and a 0.5:1 6th T56.
Audi 4.2l V8. Compact, light, good power.
I think the easiest non-rotary would be cobbling together a 2.0 or 2.3 turbo.
