I am looking for something cheap, carburetored (with the possibility of fuel injection later maybe), small (aka small enough to fit in a Midget engine bay), lightweight and low power (less then 100bhp). I thought about a Toyota 2TC or 3TC. Any suggestions?

I have a 1500 but no 1275. I was looking for something with a bit of a power boost over the stock engines.

I dunno, seems to me an electric conversion would be about as complex as wiring up a starter motor. How hard can it be?

Since all I know about are Miata-related products, what about a GLC engine? They were carbureted, and you can gradually turn one into a Miata engine as you befriend the electrons and go crazy with the multiple camshafts. They've been put in Midgets before so we know they fit.

4AGE? You can run them on carbs easily enough, and they've been put in Spridgets before.

I honestly think that any carbureted engine past '74 is going to be more complicated that an injected. I'd go for a 4age, or better yet, WAY better yet, G13b out of a Suzuki swift GTi. 1300cc, all aluminum, bolt to a samurai trans, and weigh very little. There are dual weber 40 kits if you are stuck on carbs, but they are also pretty easy to MS. Also there is a website showing how to do it: http://www.ado13.com/dohczuke/dohc.htm

Good luck, and I'd be glad to lend my experience- I swapped a toyota 4age 20v into my midget.

If you want carbed, we had a pretty good time with the B18 or B20 from Volvo - right at 100 HP depending on trim and relatively compact.

More seriously, I don't know how light the Toyota T motors are, and at least with the 3T are probably more power than you're looking for.

What you could look at though is a 4A-C. Drifters literally throw those motors away, so they're definitely cheap, my mildly modified one put down 65hp to the tires through a T50 and 6.38" Toyota axle. Only real downside I can think of is that they're not crossflow, but everything's on the passenger side, so in a tiny car, that might help offset the weight balance from the driver just a hair. Also makes turbos way easy, or at least so sayeth the crazy Australians who turbo EVERYTHING.

The kent crossflow is seriously small. It was a OEM Lotus seven engine, its gotta be small, and getting 100 hp is relatively simple thanks to Formula ford people. Finding a T50 for a 4age is probably harder than finding a ford transmission to bolt up to a xflow.

Suzuki G10 turbo from a Swift/Sprint/Firefly with a Samurai 5spd. The engine weigh almost nothing and are tiny.

engine delivered 73 hp (54 kW) at 4500 rpm and 115 lb·ft (156 N·m) at 3500 rpm

There's one locally that was in the CM magazine last year, got a DOHC straight six Jag engine. I may be a liitle nose heavy but it's damn pretty.

I would second the Suzuki G recomendation as well as the Subaru EF out of the Justy. Or even worse, I mean better, would be a aircooled VW motor!

What kinda wiring would I be looking at doing to convert a Midget to fuel injection? Aren't rotaries a bit porky? I was looking for something not much heavier then the stock engine. What makes carbed engines past '74 complicated? Emissions?

how about an alfa engine.. beautiful aluminum and not too big

there is always the engine out the Miata.. carbs are just a matter of ripping off the injection.. or stay with injection and add megasquirt
