Just to add fuel to the fire. I saw this at Sebring this year.

Not a wagon/hatch. I need the space, a sportbak doesn't give me the space I want.

Apparently Jaguar is heavily discounting these, Jalopnik showed them marked down from $71k to $46k! Reviews on them were mixed tho and it doesn't look like there are any locally for me to check out. Dealer in Salt Lake ~450 miles away has a bunch of leftover brand new '18's.

It would be worth the trip to checkout if you can swing it. My son and I were walking out the gate to leave for the day and that caught my eye. I got a big eye roll and a "come on Dad" from him when I stopped to take the pictures but he is only 11 so I have time yet to set him straight.
Just curious what "athletic equipment" you need to haul that demands an SUV?
I remember fitting an interior door in my '98 Z34 Monte Carlo in college. Laid down the back seats and closed the trunk.

Dog won't be happy in a sportbak. I don't want a sedan and that's basically what these sportbaks are. They're a sedan footprint with a hatch, not a hatch/wagon that gives a ton more room.
I want the flexibility that a true hatch/wagon gives, if I wanted a sedan, I'd go buy an RS3 or RS5 and call it a day.
I'm personally partial the the Focus RS (obviously), mostly for its autocross performance but also for its fun-to-drive factor in everyday use. There's just no quicker way to get from point A to point B. My base cloth seats are more comfortable and have a better seating position than the optional RS2 seats, and I changed the rims from 19" to 18", which settles out the ride a lot.
Did I mention the autocross performance? ;)

Fair enough. You want what you want. No problem with that at all.
But, how big is your dog!? We put a 60lb pit and our two smaller dogs in the back seat of my girlfriends Honda Fit without an issue. They look around for a few miles, then just lay down and go back to sleep.

Nice feature in the German wagons for dirty pooch hauling is the factory cargo net that extends from rear seatback (either up or down) to the roof. You can keep them in the back without muddy paws and slobber all over your nice leather seats. MB, Audi & BMW have all had these for years but I've never seen it in any other brands.
Another contender: BMW made an N55-powered previous-gen X1 - basically the 335i wagon we all really wanted.
In reply to z31maniac :
He's a 90lb yellow lab. I don't want him in the back seat, messing up the leather and he won't fit there at all when the kids sit in the back seat.
Not long ago there were pages of Focus RS' for sale, now there are hardly any. Looks like they made it through their first owner and now the 2nd owners are happy with them.
X1 is a crossover, don't want a crossover. If I'm forced into one, the GLA AMG45 or Macan are the class leaders.
I plan on trying to drive as many cars as I have time this Friday. The good news is the GX is still drivable (I do need to throw the axle in it) so I've got time to shop.
I feel like I am having the same discussion internally. My e60 is about to need major parts, so I am off to look for hatches and wagons. My wife has a Golf Sportwagen 4moton. I like it, but the performance is lacking, so I am looking R and GTI. Running the numbers, with about 4-5K in mods I can get to the R's performance, minus the 2.0 motor. I just have to get over the two of the same cars. I keep going back to that, so added the GTI, as I don't need all the space as she has a wagen. Oh the first world problems.
Take a look at a BMW 335 GT. Surprising amount of room in the back with seats up. Should be able to handle the Lab. The rear deck panels are removeable and stowable under the cargo floor. They are quick and still handle well. My friend bought one on my recommendation and he loves it. They were not a sales success so they can be had cheap. There is also tons of rear leg room, they are used as limos in China. More interior volume than a 330 Touring.
PS. I have a medium sized dog kennel and it fit in the hatch of the GT better than my E91. My friend's tallish Labradoodle fits in easily as well.

The latest, post 2015, MINIs are actually very reliable, so much so that the dealer service departments are hurting for work.
Don't think I've seen WRX mentioned...?
Pretty fast with a tune (not AMG E wagon fast though...), AWD, plenty of support & go fast bits, etc.

Can't believe no one has suggested this.
Good point. I know a guy with one and he loves it....also uses it to haul large dogs.
In reply to bcp2011 :
Because a WRX is a sedan. I don't want a sedan. I don't want a sedan sportbak, that's still a sedan. I want the carrying capacity you get from a traditionally shaped hatchback/wagon.
In reply to yupididit :
Yeah, in the realm of ridiculously overpowered SUV's, that's on the radar. I'm hoping to drive a car or two this afternoon and a few tomorrow. That should help cement my choices...
Just musing here, but it's a shame that Mazda and Honda don't give us a real wagon version of the 6/Accord. Both companies have shown a willingness to spend money on out-of-mainstream vehicles like the Element/Miata/Ridgeline/RX-8, so why not a wagon, which presumably they already make for overseas markets anyway?
