This weekend at a PCA track day a driver had an issue because their HANS hadn't been recirtified in 5 years.

Other than SVRA I wasn't aware of any group requiring HANS devices to be recertified.

So what groups do you know of that require HANS devices to be recertified?

Both NASA and SCCA race groups do.

No track day group has ever looked at my HANS.

I believe lemons does.  Champcar kinda does.  However, nobody checks in champcar any more.

Isn't the difference between SFI vs FIA hans, that the SFI hans requires certification? Do any sanctioning bodies require SFI version, or require recertification of the FIA version?

When did SCCA start requiring that?

I would expect that any org that requires the use of a HANS would require that HANS to have current certification.

I can't speak to your region, but both SFR and CalClub do a gear check when they give you the annual inspection sticker on the car, and they look at the expiration date on the HANS at that time.

IIRC, NASA requires current certification but they don't actually inspect them.

SCCA requires you to get an annual helmet sticker, and to get that sticker they inspect all your gear.  So yes, in theory they would catch if your HANS was past its certification date.

I bought an adjustable one 4 1/2 years ago so I could use it for both cars.

I am sending my original one back to be recertified.

I've never done a track day so I can't speak to that but every sanctioning body that I've raced with requiers a HANS and that it be current.

American Rally Association (ARA), NASA Rally, all other rally groups.

Though if you have an FIA HANS you can just buy a new helmet strap and don' t need to "send" the HANS itself anywhere. It's just the strap that expires. We are always thankful that Rally allows FIA certs alongside SFI.....

When I did a race at Harris Hill with Champcar a few years ago, I wasn't allowed to use my Hans because it still had the original certification sticker.  I had to get it recertified before my next race with them.

BTW, you don't always have to send them off to get recertified.  The big local race gear store (Wine Country Motorsports at Sonoma raceway) can do the recertifications in-house, which is a whole lot more convenient.  Takes about 10 minutes.

I don't think PCA does.  When I was Tech Chair there was some rumblings about it as they do have expiration stickers on them, but nothing was put in stone for DE, not sure about club racing.  Every region will have its own rules though...
