SWMBO has the kids camping with the fam for 3 days while I'm stuck at work. So what do I do with my first afternoon to myself?

Sand all the dam paint off my car, of course! It gets worse, I also decided I could hackjob body-panel repair the front fender, took the tallights out, re-bondoed the quarter panel seams, fixed the hood dent, busted a headlight (berk me that sucked), and started painting the thing.

Yeah, you heard me: paint

I'm probably going to regret this.

I regretted sanding the paint off the GMC, but mostly because of what I found underneath, I wish you better luck!

Have no regrets attempting something big. Only regret having never tried. There's almost nothing you can do that can't be undone/redone.

It sounds like you're well on schedule; I get the impression you may already be at regret and working your way toward awesome... I can't remember where denial or grief are in the steps, so brace yourself.

Is it going to be like one of those makeover shows? Wife leaves for a few days, comes home and the car is completely rebuilt? Oh wait, you were supposed to rebuild the kitchen and got sidetracked, didn't you...

Better get moving, you've got 2 days until the family returns and progress stops. Ask me how I know about that...

You seem like a really skilled guy. I bet this is going to turn out better than you hoped. Bodywork seems really intimidating to me, I really respect folks who can do it.

Thanks! I'm glad somebody is inspired by my rolling turdpile!

I'm starting with the roof, but also doing the rear filler panel, and the left front corner (which is now slightly less bashed in).

I've managed to nearly perfectly match the faded Trans Am Red (now orangish) and in a rattle can. I'm going as smooth as possible, but expecting mistakes. I will be polishing the rest of the paint out so the car will be a 50/50 (look good at 50 feet and 50MPH) and look like all original paint.

If you want it to be authentic, remember to do it a little drunk, otherwise it will come out nicer than it was when new.

Turdpile? Compared to a Mansory, its epically beautiful. On its own, it is simply suhweet.

Sure! I'm willing to teach anybody how to (barely) keep an a certified American classic (reminder of how bad build quality was in 1973...) including such things as bodywork (bondo application and wailing on metal with a hammer), engine tuning (RTV'ing leaks and randomly turning screws on a carburetor), and upholstery (duct taping rips)!
