Got a friend with a dead one that he recently dumped some cash into to. Car isn't worth much but runs and drives well. Trying to help with the fix or junk logic and maybe turn some wrenches to get him out of a bind. What is the level of effort to swap the clutch on one of these things? Any special tools necessary?
Alldata says 5.5 hours, so its not too bad, based on that. Do you have a wide selection of oddly shaped sockets that will fit the wide array of oddly shaped fasteners?
Not much different than any other FWD transmission replacement, especially if you've ever done any other VW product.
Certainly not as easy as the old 020s in MKI,II,III chassis though.
I just got rid of my 2000 Passat (same drivetrain) and purely dread the thought of replacing the clutch in it. I'd plan on spending a solid weekend and lots of cursing. The engine bay is TIGHT and the longitudinal orientation means you have to get to all the same sort of bellhousing bolts as a RWD car but with wonky halfshafts sticking out the sides of it.
Make sure you have a good set of "double square" sockets (eight point).
Be sure you have an alignment tool for the disc.
Depends on much you like this guy. Help moving or with a VW clutch job is reserved for the best bro club.
It'll suck. It's a weekend. It's totally doable. How bad does this guy need the car to get to work Monday?

Your user name for this forum is insane and I'm calling shenanigans. Nothing technical to add.
It looks like the car will be donated to the blind in return for a tax break.
If a charity for the blind is giving cars away to its recipients, that explains a lot about some of the drivers I've seen recently.
