i thought about pickup and suv combos first as they are some of the few remaining rwd 4 cylinders, but the trucks i have driven seem to have pretty clunky shifter linkages. (the used s10, ranger, and tacoma trucks i have driven did anyway) it also seems like the intakes on the truck models are taller than the car equivelents. probably not all of them though.... are there any trucks out there that have smoother shifting transmissions that i should look into?

My Mazda B2000 had a really slick 5spd gearbox. The engine wasn't the most powerful thing in the world though. No experience with the automatics.

I used to work for a guy who had a mid-70's (I think) SL (R107?). He put a 70's Camaro subframe under the front, which was a relatively easy project. That allowed him to use off-the-shelf headers and GM chassis and brake parts, as well as a SBC.

I bet he would have done this for Challenge money. It was done well, but not expensively.

Mitsubishi Mighty Max/Dodge 50 4 cylinder. I had the Mitsubishi, and nothing broke on it. Normal wear and tear, yes, but, I drive it for 4 months with a frozen clutch--bad $$ time in my life. I simply put it in first gear, turned the starter, the engine caught, and off I went. I matched the engine revs when downshifting, and it worked like a charm. Upshifting, no problem. When I did change the clutch, finally, the size and weight of the tranny would lead me to believe it was part sourced to handle much higher hp and torque. Impressive.

Weren't the Max's prime candidates for 4g63 swaps with a little finagling of the bell housing? I see boosted mercedes.....

I meant to say that i was considering trucks witha a manual and that the manaul shifter linkages felt clunky. i am not particularly interested in an auto for this project.
