Oh wise hive mind, what are some of the better, bang-for-the-buck options for a roof rack and cargo box? Probably a universal option since I'm looking for my ae86.
What say ye?

I had a largish Sears unit that served me well. I bought it secondhand, so I think my actual advice, at least on the roof box, is to shop that way. They're kinda expensive and take up a lot of room, so there is probably one cheap at a garage sale, freecycle list, or Craigslist near you.
Having the rack blow off is never fun. Nor is having it simply fret and slip, wearing out the paint. It also sucks when the cheap or wood rack sags, tearing up the center of the roof.
That's why when I run a rack I run one that fits securely, locks down real well, and is strong. To that end, I've been very pleased with the various Yakima racks I've used over the years.
Having sold pretty much all the major brands at a ski shop for the last 20 years, I would rank the top-quality bars and boxes as Thule and Yakima (in that order).
Both can be gotten in crossbars/feet that will fit any car (including your AE86), and there's a wide variety of cargo box sizes (all aero). Quality is top-notch for both, but I'd give the edge to Thule on the latch designs and strength.
Packasport boxes are really nice and probably the best looking (and can be ordered color-matched to your car's paint code), but they are pretty pricey in comparison to the Thule/Yaki.
