After years of borrowing a buffer, I finally decide to buy my own. It's a six inch Porter Cable, which seems to be the one that everybody uses. What size pads should I order? It looks like they come in 6", 6.5", 7" and 7.5"
Porter Cable Buffer

It looks like I'll also need the velcro base pad for it.
I think mine are 7.5", definitely wider than the backing plate. Years ago when I got mine the consensus was to go wider than the backing plate.
Buy the wider backing plate and use the common 6.5" pads. I use Lake Country brand FWIW.
I think mine are 6.5". You want to make sure the edges of the backing plate aren't exposed, but a smaller pad can get into tighter areas on the car. I use Chemical Guys pads.
Love my 7424XP, by the way. Fantastic tool.
I've got the same buffer but I haven't bought the velcro disc or the pads yet. Been using it for sanding.
Most of the info I found on them on Autogeek and elsewhere suggested using a 6" backer and 6.5" pads, I think. But you guys are saying 7.5"? Wanna 'splain? Got any links to the parts in question?
I was just thinking I needed to pony up for the stuff to buff out the boat...
EDIT..Nevermind on the links, I found the stuff. But Why 7.5 over 6.5? Just more area?
I just ordered a six inch backing plate, plus the proper six inch counterweight and the kit of eight 6.5" pads.
Been thinking about buying one of those for some time. Didja get a deal?
It all came through Amazon. The buffer was $119. The pads, counterweight and backing plate came from Chemical Guys through Amazon. It was cheaper than buying directly from Chemical Guys.
I accidentally clicked "One Click Ordering" on the buffer before I knew that I needed a backing plate and counterweight. I might have saved a little more with a complete kit but it was too late.
I've got the 7424 XP and have had it for a few years now and I got to say its the best one I've used for the $$$. It gives you all of the control you need for an amateur. You should be happy with the purchase.
Are there ample 5/16 in.-24 in. spindle thread accessories? Everything I been using has been 5/8" N.C., which there were tons of accessories.
