The engine didn't get that way in the last week, it's been running like that for a while. Unless you can remove all the sludge don't remove any of it. Put the cover back on and drive it.
instead of plugging drainage holes couldn't you just take the head off right quick and not have to worry about it? or is there a crap load of misc that needs to be removed to pop the head off, nissan 3.3 style?
The ones I saw done were where it was a 'cure it or kill it' type thing, i.e. the customer was told we can try this but if it doesn't work it's time for a motor. In both cases it seemed to work fine. But I wouldn't try it with that hard crusty stuff; it won't dissolve easily and will block the oil pump pickup. Of course if CINO (Cost Is No Object) by all means rip it apart, have a good time.
