Pish, old Toyotas are still worth something because they are the best compact pickup trucks, there's a reason these things motorized half the armies in the world.
If you keep a close eye on the Craigslist you'll find a decent one for $1k, just avoid the V6, which gets E36 M3ty mileage and hates head gaskets. And check the frame closely for rust.
edit: a case study for you, I annihilated a Saturn SL with my 4Runner this winter and it didn't even tweak the bumper mounts on the frame. The Saturn looked like it's been dropped from an overpass and the only reason I couldn't drive the 4Runner home was that some plastic Saturn bits punctured my radiator core. Careful, that E36 M3's sharp.

Man, i guess i didnt go far enough back in time. I forgot about the Iron Duke in s10s. Id take one of those over the 2.2 as well.
One caveat on the Toyota thing: I rarely see them, much less for sale in my neck of the woods. You can find tons of S10's and Rangers. I did parts delivery for a couple of 100K miles in most versions of each truck.
Yeah, my area the toyota's are like hens teeth at the $1k range, they seem to start about $3k and go up from there.
I passed a junkyard this week that had an older Mazda pickup out front (probably pieced together from parts) and before I could remember that it was a mid '70s and not a mid '80s "B" I was miles down the road. That's my off-handed intro into the question: "Why? at least everywhere I've ever looked (newspaper, CL, AutoTrader type mags) are Mazdas sold with HIGHER asking prices than the same year Ranger? I mean, they are the same truck."
I just got an 88 Ranger as a winter DD. I paid $1500 and it runs great and gets 21 combined. It is also very smooth on the highway. The Ranger Station is a great website for support and parts are cheap.
just got a '88 s10 with the 2.5... it was free... (FMV at $75 lol)... but it doesn't run...
around here there are so many s10s you can buy a sub 1000$ one at least once a week from CL in running/driving condition... seems any import mini truck costs almost the same and needs a new engine or trans (or so the ad says)
