https://omaha.craigslist.org/ele/d/carter-lake-warp-9-ev-dc-motor-v-500a/7072052756.html

I've kinda already decided to buy this darn thing, despite that I have NO idea what to do with it or what the owner was doing with it either. For those who don't know, Warp9 from Netgain was probably the *first* EV motor meant for performance applications; you basically can stack these end-to-end to double power in the the way of a movie I won't mention, and while they're rated to "max out" at ~220HP (156*500A/350) it's really more a question of physics and bearing life than anything else.

So, what the heck would YOU put this in? Custom EV Lowcost? Some kind of quadbike/gokart mishmash? I want to know so I have something to waste money on.

You need a giant DC motor controller to make use of that motor.  Your HP estimate is a bit high as well. 156V*500A is 78,000 Watts. The conversion for watts to HP is 1HP/746 watts. 78,000watts*1HP/746Watts=~105HP. Now you can get pretty nice power with more volts and amps. Internet lore suggests 192V as the max tolerable. They can breifly handle 1000A which is the limit of one of the larger controllers out there. 192V*1000A*1HP/746Watts=257HP. That with losses is getting pretty close to your original 220HP number and would make an amusing ride. An even more amusing thought- there is a 2000Amp controller out there.......

Edit-Thats a bit of a shady adapter-but it would be interesing to know what transmission it is meant to bolt to.

You should buy it then let it sit in your garage for a year or so then sell it to me cheap cause Challenge.

Find a cheap Mod car with a blown motor and swap it in.  Electric autocross fun.  The only gas you burn would be your generator in the grid.

That motor used to be one of the best on the market but it's a ho-hum nothing-special motor by today's standards...you'd want to put it in a fairly light vehicle so I'd say an EV Locost would be a good choice. Or a full-scale RC buggy laugh

These days, a really good EV motor is an axial flux design and can handle 800V.

I'd electrify an MGB or a Spitfire or something light and get to work without having to ever have people come up to me at a gas station.

This is classic! I remember they were still running this after the graphite Team cars came out.

I'd love to put that in my Farmall tractor.

It looks like either air cooled vw or Subaru on the adapter.

Build a Drift car with it, maybe an RX8 with bad motor and 5-speed and an on/off switch will keep the tires smoking.  ;)

That seems really expensive to me. The market for those must be small...

In reply to KyAllroad (Jeremy) and honestly half this thread :

That's kind of the running ground plan; stab it into something small and "kinda sorta" street legal (Midwest rust belt, laws are more implied here, we have no inspections) and rip with it. I'm still learning about Motor technologies in general, but there are plenty of people whom are building their own DC motor controllers for eBikes right now and you all are great resource for learning on one's own- so I'm looking at it as a "I don't know enough YET" mindset.

My only issue is while it seems perfect for a sand rail/VW Beetle driveline, i'm not sure if the suspension is good for autocross without huge upgrades. Maybe a Midlana? RX8 is also a good idea, but I know the electronics in them are kind of absurd with 3 different computers from an old build some guy attempted to turn a Shinka variant into an EV.

In reply to GameboyRMH :

Yeah, atrial flux of an Agni. The only reason i'm considering this is literally the price- it's down to a 1/3rd of new, and a brushed DC motor is as simple as they come. DC is also FAR, FAR SAFER than AC to experiment with when you're learning, i.e. myself.

In reply to Robbie :

There's A market for EV conversions, but it's rare you can make it a "better" car with electrons. Outside of specialty stuff like racing, its typically better just to buy an OEM EV.

However, if you want to drive to work and do daily runabout chores cheaply, nothing compares to eBikes or Velomobiles. Efficiency on those honestly is insane.

I'd suggest something with irs. That makes it super easy to bolt the motor direct to the rear diff. Find something with a pretty high ratio rear end and you should be good. Cough Miata cough.

The other really cool idea I've wanted to do for a long time is the conversion of a transverse AWD car. Electric out back and gas in the front. Run one or both at any time. Volvos, Subarus, crv/rav4, Suzuki sx4, etc for interesting options.

All that said, keep in mind you can probably grab the entire motor, trans, and controller from a wrecked leaf for about the same $$ as this is asking.

It would be a great motor for a classic beetle EV project, just about the torque you would want at a great cost...batteries and controller are something else though.
