I agree with this.

Donating isn't a bad idea if you aren't going to jump it off stuff (still the best idea).

Yet, you see it as not a dick move to rip out the pristine interior of someones pride and put into the path of harms way on a track.
Sell it to someone who may appreciate it as much as the owner did.

Of course, the irony here may be that it was the owners only car. At that point, it seems odd to me for an owner to brag about only having traveled 33k miles in 25ish years.
How much did the owner really enjoy the car? He never took it anywhere.

Another dick voting Lemons here, too. Let the thing go out in a blaze (well, fart) of 'glory'. That will make up for all the time it spent doing the automotive version of being locked in the basement during its teenage years and never losing its virginity.

I don't really have an answer for you, but the best one in the world sucked when it was new. Sorry.

I like the donation idea, though. Somebody needs a car like this.

Lot of emotional attachments have been formed to the fine '88 Cutlass Ciera. I can definitely understand not wanting to shame such a fine automotive gift by selling it.

I used to autocross an A-body Pontiac 6000 STE. Won a provincial class championship with it in H/stock, too. I'd drive this one and tighten up the suspension to get rid of that "Oldsmobile ride", maybe put some decent front seats in it, a stereo upgrade and DD it for a few years.
Then jump it !

On a serious note. I see you're from New Jersey. There are probably going to be some less well to do folks who have lost their vehicles and would relish a 33K mile Olds. Just a thought.

Fair enough, but what's the statute of limitations here? If he keeps it for six months or a year, is it less dick-worthy?

I know they were awful when new, but it sounds like this one is a real cream puff. I wouldn't tear it up, I'd find someone who wants that kind of car. Because if I've learned anything, it's that even the most abysmal cars have their fans (cough, Yugo, cough).

Babe rally might be fun but it doesn't really seem to be in the spirit of the event to take that kind of car.

Not if you find somebody deserving who recently experienced, say, a biblical flood and now needs decent transportation quickly and cheaply.

Serious question, what would something like that sell for? I ask because my grandma just got a new car and I am now in charge of selling her 94 Buick Century which is basically the same car. It has 70k miles on in and is in great shape. Right now I have a buddy that might buy it for $1500 which is a steal IMHO. Assuming he doesn't buy it, it's going on craigslist and I have no idea what to price it at.

But yeah those cars do suck and they handle like crap. I did have my grandmas car up to 90mph the other day though.

I think $1,500 is probably all the money for it. The thing is, if it were a Honda or Toyota it'd be worth more. That's the problem with pop's car. He's not going to sell it, because as stated earlier that would be a dick move, but even if he did it's not really worth anything.

Respectable at best. Probably high 20s. Pretty lousy tradeoff for well under 100hp (I don't remember the exact number).

Look, by today's standards, it's an awful car. Hell, by late 80s standards it wasn't that great. I had a friend in HS who's mom had one with the 3.8, that was decent, but with the Iron Duke? Forget it.

As far as the space, this isn't a Delta 88, it's a Ciera, an A-body like a Pontiac 6000. They weren't that big, they were considered midsized.

+1 Nice to have an extra car now and then when the regular car is down.

Or Find some poor family down on their luck from having lost their car in Superstorm Sandy and give it to them.

As much as I would prefer a Chrysler New Yorker (or Diplomat) of the era mediately preceding this with a 318, I would still totally daily that Olds. I don't really care about driving enjoyment in my daily driver, they are mostly tools, and that is a fine tool for going to work and running errands with, and even a little funny on top of it.

I also confess to genuinely liking this cars sibling, the Cutlass Supreme, preferring the coupe over the 'vert'.

i drove an 87 Celebrity with a 2.5 as my daily driver for 6 months- that's the same car as a Ciera with cheesier trim... it wouldn't get you anywhere fast, but it would get you there... and it never got under 27mpg- which, to me, was pretty damn good for what it was. those cars are good commuters- nothing more, nothing less.. that's all they were engineered to be, and they fit that role quite well.

drive it for 167k miles then sell at 200k for the same you could get for it now.

or give it to my dad, he would love it.

my buddy bought a 33k mile ciera with a 3300 v6 from his wife's grandparents right before they both kicked the bucket for a grand.

Thats an iron duke 2.5, right? I had a 5 speed '87 Grand Am with that motor. It took an unbelievable beating for years. At 230k, my brother wrecked it which sent it to the scrapper.

I say spray it until it pops, then start a 5.3 project with it. Would be a hell of a sleeper.

I like the way you think, Pat. Yes it is an Iron Duke and yes I think a 5.3 from a GXP Grand Prix or MonteCarlo would make for an awesome sleeper.

The thought of spraying the Duke makes me chuckle. A 100 shot would double its output and it'd still be slow.
