What you are describing you want is an SUV (except the mileage part!).
I know others are going to crap all over me, but towing 3300 lbs and 5 people in a Volvo wagon. Not a great idea in my mind.
Put a 2.3 turbo redblock in it and turn up the boost. Rent a truck when you need to tow.
These truck engines you guys are suggesting are great, but HUGE. Ever actually see a 4.9L ford I-6? Big.

Would love a diesel, but finding that has the capacity to tow 3500 lbs with the car loaded with a family of 5,and still fits under the hood would be hard.
V6 ecoboost would be great but still to new to find cheap.
Disagree. Of equal displacement, a diesel will trump a gas any day... hard. The ability to double the torque over a similar gas engine is easy. Plus, the MPG advantages can be huge.
You're seriously talking about diesel.
OKFINE I'll give up my: I may do it one day project, in hopes that you will do it one day sooner... there was a JDM take out Diesel Turbo 4cylinder from a Tacoma on ebay two weeks ago. May still be there. It had good miles, was complete and was reasonably priced. I have their info if you can't find it...

The reason I am looking for milage is I have to do 350 km drive one way to my cottage. I have bought a van to do all my heavy towing with, but It would cost the better part of 200 to get there and run around for the weekend. Where as I can do the brick and my trailer for about 75 right now.
I am going to take the car and redo all the shocks and springs and bushings. The current motor has 500k on it and needs a rebuild, This is why I am tossing the idear around.
Right now I am getting about 350 km on 50 liters of gas. witch really sucks.

5cyl or 4 cy; turbo in it now.... jw... the b230 i had before was doing just fine at 390000 miles not km would prob still be running if it wasnt for a blown water pump and not being able to fix it right then and being in the middle of nowhere wyoming. (y i drove the 84 volvo to wyoming and through the mountains instead of one of our much newer more and funner vehicles is simple. old volvos are a whole bunch of fun on dirt roads. set of good year wranglers(mail truck tires ftw) and they will darn near go anywhere
