In reply to Stampie : 3700 pounds is only true up to about 1977 after that they got heavier every year until about 1981 when they settled on 4200 pounds.  XJ12’s were similar but got up to 4600 pounds once the shorter chassis was discontinued.

I’ve never worked with a  XJ12 but for the XJS  once you remove the interior, undercoating, bumpers,  HVAC, excess wiring etc.  getting weight under 3000 pounds for  post 1981 XJS  with a rollcage/ bar  gets extremely hard without spending money.   Lexan (or polycarbonate) is lighter than glass but more expensive than leaving glass in place.

Hood, trunklid, doors, fenders, can all be lightened, at costs.  Brake calipers can be switched from Iron to Aluminum at a cost.

I paid $500 for mine, selling off $250. Would leave $1769 left for power adders and weight reduction.

Since molds don’t count I’d go to lighter body parts with about $600, $400 for wheels, and power adders for $769

In theory 2700 pounds is possible with a rollcage  and reasonably complete appearance. 2300 pounds only with the most brutal and intensive weight reduction, more of a “modified” appearance than a production car.

I'd aim for just over 11.5 in the quarter so no roll cage needed.  I made my own lexan front and rear window ~$100 for both. $600 for some fiberglass cloth and resin?  Surely it doesn't cost that much.  $400 for wheels?  I had $60 iirc in wheels last year.  You'll never succeed in proving your Jaguar point throwing money around like that.

If I come down to the Challenge it will be with the MGuar, I’m hoping I can keep that well under 2000 pounds and with  its much smaller size I should be in a competitive place.

I’ve only entered 2 autocross events so I doubt  I’ll be competitive with the “pro’s”   Do they have drag race pro’s ? I’ve only done that once, back when the first Honda Civic came out.

Maybe you can afford to build a car, travel 3000 miles round trip, spend a week in motels, plus meals.

I cant’,  I’ll have to build it in such a way as to be able to use it far into the future.  While many things can be done after an event some such as a cage pretty well needs to be installed from the start.

However, I really don’t like to put all that work into a car that at best would run mid pack ( it’s too heavy, and too big  to do better)

So it’ll be the MGuar when I do the Challenge.  The XJS will just have to wait.

Oh and the MGuar I expect will require a full cage.  Except I’ll have to figure a way to make it removable.
