Just saw it driving down the road. Menacing black Ford (Taurus?) with blacked out grill with lights hidden. Classic PI type vehicle. The rub is that it had no lights that I could see in the back, no bar in the front (just the ones in the grill) and the weirdest of all, a regular ole' license plate, not the obvious unmarked car type. The guy inside appeared to be a civilian, but the badge said PI.

What's going on here? Are PI Tauruses already for sale used at auction?

I have a friend that owns a P71 that he bought new. He was the treasurer of a town and oversaw the purchasing of police cars. Because of that he was able to buy one for himself. Maybe the same situation?

the unmarked cars down here usually have regular plates rather than the exempt ones the patrol cars usually do.

If it didn't flash red and blue lights and pull you over, don't sweat it.

SHO?!

I can't wait for a few years when those start hitting auction blocks; a stripped out street-racer type SHO would be the freakin' bees knees.

No badging of SHO anywhere that I could see. I don't know.

The new Taurus PI can be purchased in regular FWD form (N/A motor, non-SHO) and the full-zoot twin turbo EcoBoost SHO AWD form (obviously no badges).

As for a non-cop owing it, that's easy. All you need is a corporation tax ID to buy fleet sales cars, cop cars included. Our local Ford dealer does a huge fleet program and I have shopped the vehicles many times. My current employer buys fleet trucks and I have worked with security companies, private businesses, and transport companies that have all purchased the "cop cars".

Wow, cool! How much do they end up costing?

I dunno, but if you're seriously interested I can stop by and snap photos of the window stickers. I drive by there twice a day.

Not going to buy anything, just curious, don't trouble yourself.

Hey, no problem. If I'm ever in there for another reason I'll take a peek for you.

FWIW, our local departments are buying Chargers, Caprices, and Expeditions like mad. I haven't seen a single Taurus cop car in this state as a cop yet.

You'll need to log in to post.
