I just searched '1uz adaptor' on eBay motors and found a ton of options:

It is an aisin ax-15 from a 95 dakota with the 2.5 tbi. It shares the bellhousing pattern with the aisin r154. First and second are supposedly 3.83 and 2.33. Versus the supra's 3.251 and 1.955.

I thought it was a great trans when I had one in my jeep. I would also like to get experience rebuilding a manual trans myself, this looks like a good canidate.

If the transmission fails to meet expectations I could always upgrade later to the toyota r154 box with only modifications to the driveshaft and clutch hub(assuming differences).

The reasoning for choice of the ax15 over the r154 is availability. These boxes are plentiful local: I paid $100 at a you pull yard and have the sought after mopar 2.2/2.5 to r154 bellhousing. Supra boxes rarely show up in yards which leaves buying online with mixed results and higher prices.

The ax15 will probably need the input shaft turned down for a pilot bearing, I will wait for a bell housing prior to cutting.(or input shaft swap.)

And why do things the easy way when the hard way seems cheaper?
