Cragar Soft 8s or Bassett D slots are the only acceptable answer.
Standard style steels with dog bowl covers is what I'd run with. But then I'm a fan of the sleepy crowd.

Runs and drives incredibly well. Especially for a car that mostly sat for years. Except for a way too high idle and genuinely poor fuel economy. Have adjusted up and down everything that I could find on the VV. There looks like some kind of device on the side of the carb to up the idle and I have no concept of how to adjust that. Did lube it in case it was sticking with little change in operation... Pretty much thinking that it will just be happier with a 600 or 650 Holley.
Mine had the advantage of only being 10 years old when I got it. I don't remember ever having to do anything with the Carb but that was a while ago so who knows.
If you ditch the VV 2 barrel make sure you readjust the detent. I paid 400 bucks for a clean 2 door in 04 because a shop didn't adjust the detent and the lady refused to pay for a car that didn't shift til 4K rpm. I'm a fan of a performer rpm and 600 Holley combo on a stockish 302
Without more than an intake/carb swap (you might want to do more though) the performer (non rpm) would be a much better choice. And a 650 edelbrock, would be better for daily dependability. Holly's can be dialed in prefect better, but finicky for atmospheric changes. Haven't played with one yet, but I like what I've read about the Demon Street Carb.

Didn't know that was a midwest thing... my favorite rim's ever since the 70's. Always wanted the three wing (imitation knock-off's) center caps!

These with the gold wires is what I'm thinking.
That would go well, but he lives a fair bit east of Atl... not in the wrong parts of Atl.!
The dog dish steelies, on that car are not a sleeper look... but is a good look. Modern (up to 02, for correct offset) cop steelies with decent meats would look great.
Some other dog dish with trim rings (like that Falcon) would be great. But full hubcaps are the best sleeper look. I knew of a 65 Malibu that ran full caps... to race on a dragstrip, he had to screw the cover to the wheels, to make the inspectors happy!
I think the soft 8's would be a nice subtle look, and not cost a fortune.

I pretty much start with Soft 8s with any wheel search. They are one of the few wheels that looks good in any size
Another ballot cast for dog dish.
Ford OEM Turbine wheels?
Dark Horse contender, Ford OEM HPP lace wheels.
I don't remember what the cop steelies of that era looked like, but that has the same look as the truck dog dish. And against the whitewalls, I like it. And I never like the white wall out, so that's saying a lot!
The 94-02 HPP wheels would also look great against that maroon paint.
If you choose steelies, make it that it ejects the dog dish cap on every burnout, turn in the city, or jump over railroad crossings for full cop movie feel. Sometimes seven on the same car.
Do the 5 lug replica Pony wheels fit? I love seeing those on the Fairmonts and the boxy body styles are similar. They made them in 16" replica's for a while but no clue if they would fit.

This is the correct answer.
Also a fan of steelies, but always found the Ford cop/taxi steel wheels to be a little boring. The Mopar 15x8 *should* fit, eh? With the unbranded 'vented' poverty caps they even look P71ish.
How did a MD State Police Car end up down in Peach country? I vote you send it back to where it came from, preferably to me.
I am going to go against the grain here a bit...I think dog dishes on steelies is a great look, but some Mustang Bullitt wheels would look great, too.
Another vote for widened dog dish steelies. I like the Soft 8s for a nascarish look, but this car is better in the sleeper look.
Color and all, this very much reminds me of a Ford version...
...of the sleeper that I saw at Drag Week:
So, I would mimic the detail of that Caprice.
Incidentally, a 600 CFM carb is a LOT of carb for this engine. I think there are smaller ones out there, something like a 500 CFM Edelbrock 1404 would probably be perfect.

Props to our own Tony Sestito for that Bang Shift article.
As for the car, as much as I am one of the biggest custom wheel whores here, I would rock that thing with full hubcaps. They are so Malaise Mainstream Government Issue that they are edgy now.

Yes, thanks to Tony for taking the report farther than I could.
