I'd ignore it, not because it doesn't have potential, but because I don't have the time nor inclination to mess with it.
Does everybody seem to think this is a deal? Non-M5 E39s trade hands for about that much these days WITHOUT any running issues...
1) Offer $1200 because it's a 6 cyl 5 series auto that does not run
2) If the motor is not running for a serious reason, JY swap otherwise, fix
3) flip
But, at $3500 or thereabouts, ignore.
I was reading the first few comments thinking....man...is there something I'm missing? Is this car special and I don't know it? 3500 is crazy money. To me, non-running is craigslist speak for "The engine is toast but I don't want to admit I know it." That said, 1k seems reasonable, but I'd start lower than that.
The extra set of wheels and tires is worth $500. But yeah, this is a prime part-out candidate but it would be hard to get $3500 or even $3000 out of it.
And then there's the whole thing of deciding how much your time is worth, parting out a car yourself takes a lot of time.
Looks nice, but hits the ignore button. Every week the local CL will have 2-3 e39s for about $1500 - equivalent condition - good body that's either a cooling system or auto transmission issue. Selling prices are more like $1,000. Most likely scenario is that they've priced out the fix and it's 1.5-2x the value of the car.
That's actually pretty sad. Poor guy has a pretty nice looking car that's broken, and it's not worth fixing.
I would ignore. Too pricey. There is one in my neighbor's yard almost identical to this one for $1995 and he'd take $1750. And it runs and drives.
This guy's ad DRIPS of "I broke the timing belt so I'm going to unload it on some sucker."
