I've got another track day coming up, and I'd like to have a more solid mount for my galaxy s5 that I use as a lap timer/recorder.
With the last mount I borrowed, the camera bounced around too much to stabilize the video.

When I had my Droid2, I had the official Motorola mount and it was fantastic. For my S3 I had a more universal mount that didn't work on the track. I can't find anything that holds my Nexus 6 :-(
With students, I've been really impressed with RAM mounts. They are pricey, but are easy to use and hold really well.
Hmm. I'd get a cheap go pro or a sony action camera.
I'm getting a Nexus 6 this week (Amazon delivery) and really hoping it fits into this slot for a phone right next to the cup holder in my car. Measurements say it does.. but I know it's a BIG phone.
Our local STS Miata hotshoe uses RAM mounts around his car. His videos are somehow smooth despite his suspension being rough as heck!

I have RAM mounts in both our vehicles. They are rock-solid and very well made.

I have a CD slot mount that I use with my Nexus 6. I bought it when I had a smaller phone and really liked it, but it is at the edge of its effectiveness with the Nexus 6. It has a magnetic surface that attracts included self-adhesive metal plates that stick to your phone or case. I used the smaller, square, phone-sized metal plate on my case, but I should have used the larger tablet metal plate. I may try switching for the tablet plate. Anyway, it works for a road trip on paved roads, where you'd like music and nav. It's not for anything rougher. It also seems that these metal plates preclude the use of a wireless charger.
I have a RAM mount for my phone(s) - I think you'll have to play a bit with the actual mount, the arm length and the mounting position to get the least vibrating picture. It can be done. My recommendation is to make sure that the mount, arm and suction cup mount don't form a straight line, that's just about the worst possible position and ensures maximum vibration.

Love my RAM stuff for track work. Suitably stable, many modular options to suit every situation.
pro-tip: keep your old smart phone and get a second ram mount for it and use it for externally shot video as well. A potential Raspberry Pi project would be to design a bluetooth linked video stop/start recording control for the second externally mounted phone.
In reply to captdownshift: Wouldn't a remote shutter (wired to headphone or Bluetooth) control as found on a selfie stick do the job?
