Yup! That's a Hard Dog roll bar for our Miata in the trunk of the P71, in-between the WHEEL WELLS with room to spare. The seller had to bring it in his Forester with the seats down and it barely cleared the hatch. Full-size cars freaking rock.
I hauled a full set of rally tires, and two full sized spares along with a floor jack, and 2 jackstands in the trunk of my Crown before. It was pretty awesome.
your spare isnt mounted up on top like it should be, thats what is wrong.
nothing wrong with a miata rollbar in the trunk, you could fit half a miata in there.
Man, I forgot how HUGE the panther trunk is. We could fit everything we needed for a 2 week vacation for a family of 5 in it. Then we replaced our Grand Marquis with a Country Squire wagon...
God I wish I had a chance to drive those.
When the Stealthtercel was new and the more reliable car in the family, we put all our luggage for a week, AND a collapsible crib thing, in the trunk, plus two kids (one in a car seat) plus two grownups. Nobody believed we could do it. The secret was to start with the crib thing: push it up between the rear struts at the far end of the trunk. Everything else just squeezed in after that. I admit that the passengers, once installed, didn't move around much.
I also admit that the MPV is a LOT more fun to do this with, even with one kid away at university.
Drove to SC once in dad's Caddy, and brought a 4-point Neon roll bar back in the back seat. As well as a set of alloy rims and Azenis.
Big cars are the shiznett when it comes to hauling stuff.
A weeks worth of carp for a family of three at the beach fit in the trunk of a Grand Marquis with space left to take home the stuff grandma will give to the four year old. I did mention one of the three is four didnt I?
I managed to fit my miata roll bar in the back seat of a tercel, that was a much tighter squeeze.
My marquis on the other hand once held 9 people at one time with no bodies in the trunk.
So far I've figured out the following loads will fit back there:

I race the car all the time, which requires taking the spare out. It's a royal PITA to do that from the shelf, so I leave it on the floor with all the junk in it.
And yes other people, it's mounted on a rim. 16x8 P71 steelie with a 225/60/16 tire.
