I am learning that these cars came stock with a weird metric sized rim. The replacement tire for these cars are not being made anymore. If you can find them they are 400-600 per tire
The best alternative is to replace the rims with ones of standard size either a 16 or 17 and a width of say 7-8" would be fine. These are hub centric I believe.
Anyone know of a cheep source for these? IS there a manufacturer of steel rims out there that would just machine the centers to spec?
Anyone have a aftermarket set in the barn that whey want to sell on the cheep?
Sounds like Michelin TRX's rearing their ugly head again...
Yep I think you are corect
E38/39 wheels are plentiful, cheap and generally good looking.
E38 wheels will bolt on.
M5 wheels will bolt on.
Standard E39 wheels will require a hub ring.
16" standard e39 wheels
the TRX tyres were crap when new.. imagine them now
Steel wheals do not belong on an '87 M6 unless they are 12" Diamonds under huge box flares.
MUST HAVE PICS!
I was gonna say take a look at Diamond. ^^
iirc they will make a wheel to any size/offset/bolt pattern/hub bore/color/anything you want.
I have some RSs that are metric sitting here. Your best bet is to hit the BMW forums and look for some cast off aftermarket wheels. I just bought a nice set with new snow tires for $325.
you can't go wrong with castoff stockers either.

These are probably the easiest ones to find and you can generally get a set for a couple hundred bucks. They are 16", the original TRX wheels on an M6 were 415mm which works out to about 16.33"...I'd keep an eye out for some 17" style 5 wheels off an e39 5 series with the sport option; they're a two piece wheel made by BBS and they look really nice on these cars.
These are generally more expensive, maybe in the $600 range, plus you need hubcentric rings to make them work but those are cheap.
I personally like the alpina style ones

Holy crap I want one of those now. What's a good forum to dig around for one?
That is one BMW that I will own one day.
If you are driving it in the snow I have a set of steelies and hub caps that I bought for my (long gone) E28 that should bolt right up. I just happened to trip over them while storing my slicks and made a mental note that I ought to sell those.

Don't get one of those. Get one of these instead. Much cooler!
Local BMWCCA instructor just recently sold this M6
As much as I love the way the big coupes look (and E9 > E24, BTW), having seen up close and personal how frighteningly they rust and how expensive the parts are ($1200+ for a nose, 500-900 for fenders, and unobtanium inner fender parts, which are always rusted, for example), I think I've been cured of any desire to actually own one. Mostly.
The older CS coupes can have crazy rust issues, but the 6 series cars aren't so bad - there's still a lot of them that are rusty as well, but it's more simply due to their age than poor design.
