I've got a 2004 Cooper S JCW. The interior is one step above awful.
I've seen some late model MINIs that had fantastic interiors. Actually looks like BMW quality. Beautiful stitching, leather, etc.
About when did they upgrade?

The second generation cars got more interior choices, like brown leather. I like the interior of my 2003 MINIs, but brown wasn't an option. There was a black with blue insert leather package though.
Pretty much with the generational changes you see the interiors get better. My R57 was really nice inside but DO NOT GET THE SUNROOF. They squeak and leak and are just about the worst thing I have ever dealt with on a car.
On the early cars the Inspired by Goodwin are the ones to get if you have the scratch and like the older interior layout.
No, I'm probably looking for one that is a bit newer. My partner is not a car enthusiast, but she like nice things. We'd like a convertible as a beach cruiser. I'm thinking the compromise car we may be looking for is a MINI Cooper S with the nicer interior. (But I don't want to pay new prices)
She'll let me have my small sporty car and a manual transmission, if I let her have something that's a little heavier and has a nice interior.
Helps that it has a back seat.
I was just trying to figure out what model years I should start looking at.
Yeahhh, sorry. As a friend with a BMW repair shop put it "If I had kids, they'd be going to great colleges because of modern Minis."
In reply to Tom Suddard :
I'm compromising on whether or not I consider them terrible cars.
They are FUN cars. That makes me happy. They are CUTE cars. That makes her happy.
And I've got grandkids. The back seat means the car might actually get used as a fun car when they visit.

When my daughter needed a reliable commuter, I made sure she didn't get a MINI (not even the free one I already own).
You want an F series car (2016 -on ) - BMW motors and interiors - they already had BMW suspension and brakes in the earlier cars.
Cool trick on the convertibles - the top slides back like a sunroof, or you can have it open all the way!
