We have had a few break-ins in our neighborhood, so our HOA recently scheduled a meeting with the police. Four officers, including the captain, met with us.
Interesting datapoint: At least for our town, most break-ins happen on Wednesday.

I have no idea on day, but between midnight and 2:00am is usually when the security camera picks up the trouble. I've tried to convince the cops to just run over anyone in this part of town that's riding a bicycle after dark, but they claim that's not ok...
I would have expected most break-ins to occur whilst the vehicle is parked.
Woo! I'll see myself out.
My sister had her house broken into three times and always a holiday (Christmas or Thanksgiving).
The third time there was a full wallet on the dresser and the idiots walked right by it to go grab the little safe in the closet.
Cops mentioned on the third robbery not one house in the hood was broken into except theirs. In the end the druggie (my sweet nephew) son was tipping off his drug buddies and splitting it all up.
We had a rash of "unauthorized entries" in our neighborhood a few years back. Most occurred between 9:30 and 11:00 pm on weeknights. It was a group of teenagers walking home at curfew. Some nights they would check cars they passed to see if the doors were locked. If a door was unlocked they went through the car and took what they could find of value and any current/popular cd's. Took a few months to catch them because it was sort of random and haphazard.
If it's like my neighbourhood lately, the break-ins start after the methadone clinic opens.
Any new tenants in the area?

No reason at all for you to be riding around the industrial part of the city. I'd bet a pretty long dollar the cops could stop every single person (walking, biking or driving) in this part of the city after midnight and easily find some reason to charge them.
Its a goddam shopping bazzar for meth heads.

And that is a whole lot more common than many people think. I also never tell the newspaper delivery people that I'm away.

Sometimes the industrial area is between where you are and where you want to be. I'd be okay with not being run over or arrested just for being where you don't want me.
As someone who once woke up on a Thursday morning at 1am to someone climbing in the rear window, I'd have to agree.

I'm guessing this is because most the homeowners are at a meeting with police on Wednesday?

And don't post pictures of your vacation or work trip to social media until you get home.

...or don't have friends on social media that you don't trust to know that you're out of town?
I can't believe the number of people willing to get on facebook and tell the world "Yay I'm leaving to go on vacation for a week starting Monday". One girl actually put up a status complaining that she had to work and ups was going to have to leave the expensive camera she ordered on her step all day. SMH.

As cited earlier, it's sometimes family that tips other people off ... do you know for sure that none of your family members would do something like that?

Clearly you've never seen The Fast and the Furious.
They occur when you move to Seattle. Cause Seattle leads the nation in bullE36 M3 petty crime.
Most of our car breakins are early morning. 3-4 am.

Exactly. It's too easy for your friends/family to share something. Not broadcasting that you're out of town is one of those zero effort things that has no downside and a good upside. You can do your best to lock things down - or just put the phone away.
My rule for most of my FB friends is "do they know where my parents keep the spare key?"
You'll need to log in to post.
