I assume they probably ARE out there (though I also assume it could have been a bit of an exaggeration). I just am not sure where to start looking.
I'm looking at a $2K pricepoint for a car now, and if I could really find a "a clean, single-color, no holes 01-02 for under $2K" it would be hard for me to turn down...though I'd prefer it not be white (beggers vs. choosers...I know, I know).
Frankly, I'd love to find where individuals sell these things (like a P71 dedicated message board) and go that route. I haven't found that yet, though.
I'll be searching all the nearby craigslists for "police" over the coming weeks.

And yes, I do think it would make me smile to watch people panic as I flash-to-pass in the left lane on my short (~6 miles) interstate commute.
[edit: I'm not going to be impersonating an officer or anything...I just know the sight of a crown vic with a pushbar in the rearview mirror really gets the adrenaline flowing]

Can't help you there, but there is a place on the west side of Indy that sells nothing but these. Last time i went past there, i almost had a heart attack as i saw 20+ gleaming white P71s with spotlights all facing towards me.
Indy is an EASY trip for me to fly in and drive home. If anyone has info on this place, I'd appreciate it.
Thanks, Clem

I'll look into it for you, hopefully i'll have a name and a number for you tonite.
In the past, I've seen local police auctions where they sell off their old cars. Not sure if there are other alternatives.
yeah, at the price point youre talking, you'll want to get one directly from the auction or one that somebody bought and drove first. By the time a retailer gets one and has it ready to sell plus make a profit, it ain't gonna be $2k.
I can't find anything so far Clem. I'm going to ask on the local forums in the morning and see if anyone that lives over there can remember the name. I haven't been over there in awhile.
Find your local auctions (I posted about one here last month). I picked up my dark blue '01 with 120K from Oregon State Police for $2350 in Dec '07. The same 01-02's are going for ~$1800 now and 03-05's are bringing ~$2000-$2400. Call up your local state patrol and ask where they dump them at.
Otherwise hunt CL like a crazyman and make cash offers

P71
Lexus? why?
P71, girls think cops are cool and they love the cars. Face it, the lexus will see a trooper in the rear view. How many p71's do you see pulled over? And, everybody waves and smiles and drives careful. It's got cop tires, cop motor, cop transmission, ,, etc...
I get looks, ALL the time.
and yes, I know where to get them........ I would go for a 1998-2010 VIC.
I have had 3 cop cars. 2-p71's and 1-9c1 caprice.
You cannot get me to buy another "car". The vic is awesome.
I also would like to add a note, look at the mark8 from 1994-2001
you might like that better. and cheap.....
so you want a p-71...
ok
"The day I get out of prison, my own brother picks me up in a police car...."
(That said, a P71 is on my list, too...)

Just go back to the data.
P71's are as fast as tahoes and get the same gas mileage.
Think about it.

Those test cars are completely kitted out with all of the normal police equipment though. Think cage, lightbar, console, etc. and when you add it all up, it's several hundred pounds heavier than a plain-wrapper p71.
Think about it.
P71's are cheaper than Tahoes for a much newer model. Not really an equal comparison. Actually, a P71 is much cheaper (through auction) than a SC400, so that isn't an equal comparison either.
I saw an '06 with 140k bring $900 at a dealer auction last week. It was dirty and painted like a panda, I barely resisted the urge.

Ohh boy the defend p71's at all cost fan boi hits back hard. Its just really funny that everytime I bring up things like.. Facts or Data that show how really slow and piggish these cars are, some folks don't like the numbers cause they tell you a different story about this "grassroots crap box"
How about when your car runs out of gas cause it can't barely make it into the 20's on the highway... huh?

0-60 in 8.3 come on.. really... They're not fast, period. They're like 4 door bedless pickup trucks that give those wtih an inferiority complex a tiny chubby each time someone slows down infront of it or pulls to one side in a panic..
A v6 camry goes 0-60 in ~6 seconds.... (maybe faster depending on how the accelerator sticks).. You'll get smoked by a beige mobile....
Keep them as taxi's... They suck. My cousins are happy they swapped that ford junk for a magnum and a charger. (yes they are cops).. The ford was slow and couldn't handle.

Ok, so when are these cop Magnums going to hit the auction scene? I've never been super excited about p71s, but I could really see myself in one of those.
Yeah.. So sorry about the abusive posts from last night.
The doc put on me on some prednisone to get my asthma under control and it's been cracking my mood right out. I've never had that side effect before, but must be some interaction with the crazy antibiotics.
Holy crap man, you need help! (:o ) That is one hell of an abusive post. Why do you hate these cars so much? Does it bother you that they sell well or that they are popular on the second hand market?
I may like mine, but nobody can call me a "fanboi". Nobody on this board hates the Mod Motor more than I do and I put it down every chance I get! Holy crap man...
And just to refute your asinine drivel, because now you've pissed me off, my P71 does the 1/4 in 14.8@95. Using the NHRA calculator that puts my 0-60 time at around 6.1-6.2 seconds. Yeah, no beige-bubble is going to surprise me. I've 60' in 1.8 seconds on street tires. That's called "torque", something your HonDUH doesn't have. I've also won STU at a regional autocross over a WRX, done 3 open lapping days and an HPDE, and won a drag racing season championship (4 wins in a row to boot). Definitely not a "grassroots performance car" since I only have $3000 in the car!
I've also never run out of gas. Last year I road tripped to Medford, OR from here and made it with no stops. That's 325 miles and the tank only holds 20 gallons. We got 28MPG on the way down and 25 on the way back with a load of stuff in the trunk (complete RX-7 rear axle fits in there disc-to-disc plus the front uprights, a full-size spare, a large awning, two camping chairs, toolbox, and three suitcases.
And to top all that we also took it to California last year for my sister's wedding. That was a 700+ mile trip each way. We got 26 on the way down and 23 coming back, with a freaking GOKART hanging out of the trunk! Oh my, I had to spend $7 more dollars than you in gas to be comfortable, have actual A/C, carry all of our stuff (including a suit and a dress), and bring back a full-size a go-kart in one trip. My wallet hurts soooooo bad!
Get a grip igny. You act like an Bob Costas whenever this car is brought up and it's freaking annoying. While you whine about how "un-cool" it is I'm actually using it, every damn day. 24K miles so far (rolled over 144,000 last night actually). In fact, when it rolled over 130,000 it was at 125MPH down the back straight of Portland International Raceway.
In the interest of full disclosure to my fellow GRM'ers who aren't ignorant or rabid P71 haters, I have owned 2 Hondas (a 87 Civic hatch and a 91 Accord) and an Acura (Integra GS-R) and actually like them quite a bit. In fact there is an ITR model on my desk at work in between the C6 Z06 and the Solstice GXP.
