In anticipation of my honeymoon road trip to Montreal and Quebec city (we live in PA), I had some preventative maintenance planned...wipers, oil change, brake rotors, top off fluids, etc. The only major thing I had planned was to replace the water pump and radiator, as those are original, and the car has 143,000 miles, there's lots of mountains between here and Quebec, and it'll be July, 2 people and stuff in the car, with the A/C on.

So I go and buy a radiator and water pump, and put them in the basement, and when I had the time, I would replace them.

My car, as always, had other ideas. My low coolant light came on whilst merging on the highway today coming home from work. Puzzled, I opened the hood, to be greeted by the right half of the engine bay coated in slimy Dexcool. Radiator has a nice 1/8" wide by 1.5" long crack right by the return inlet. (For those not familiar with Saturds, this is the spot they always crack...some genius in Spring Hill decided to make the end-tanks out of plastic. As well as the rest of the car.)

So, do I have precognition, or does my car somehow know what parts are in my possession, and break on purpose? Either way, there goes my Saturday. At least it didn't happen in Canadia...

Maybe it was just holding itself together waiting for you to buy the radiator.

At least it broke with something you had. It would be a real bummer if you replaced the radiator shortly before a hose blew and headgasket fail. Or something.

my cars always seem to break JUST as I buy the parts and put them in the trunk for the trip home.

Just means I can usually repair them on the side of the road. I got funny looks doing a half shaft once

One of the first things I do with any GM vehicle I own is pull out the DexCool and replace it with Prestone Gold. Since I don't buy them with any warranty that doesn't seem to be a problem. At least you can have the parts sorted before the break down instead of scrambling to find them and paying too much.
