Technically I've owned the Datsun 3 times pver the last 36 years; I bought it for $270 and then sold it the next day to a friend because I really needed a pick up to get my bike to the track, then 5 years later we turned it into a race car and so it just became mine. Then I had three race cars, it was the slowest and so away it went, then the fastest of the cars became a total burden to own so I traded it to get the Datsun back.
So when I say doesn't fit you're life I've been there.
I had a chance to buy back my first real project car. My '91 G60 GTI that was featured in the January 1997 issue of European Car magazine. A body shop had done a shop lien on it as the owner never paid them for the work. They actually offered it to me for less than I'd sold it for 5-6 years before.
Unfortunately the owner had the body shop remove the rear windows and replace them with steel panels, which totally killed any desire I had to own it again...
I haven't bought my Stalker V6 kit car back, but occasionally I hear of it. It's had three owners after me, all of which have really loved the car. In one case, the owner bought a second one so that they could have his and hers. Anyway, it makes me warm in a good way when I hear this (as opposed to the car killing its owner in a fiery crash).
Did it but not a happy ending. Two decades ago found an Audi 80 Quattro with the 5 cylinder turbo swap poorly done on this forum. Fell in love, bought it and finished the job. It was a blast, thnks to my son had a real rep in the high schol parking lot and distinct smell of clutch days he drove it. Anyway, sold it to a guy, he got too many tickets and he sold it to another guy. Other guy overcooked a ramp and banged off the Armco. Back up for sale, real cheap. As fate would have it I went to buy it back, asking price was well under parts value. It was dirveable but one wheel was seriously out of alignment and the hood wouldn't latch. Ductaped the hood down and drove it 50 miles home, one tire was corded and almost blew but made it. Parted out the car, drivetrain went to a rally guy for his racer, rest went to several other audi types and the tub went to the scrapyard. At least I recovered some cash to make up for the hundreds of hours spent on the project. In some way it was fitting that I finished the project then euthanized the project.
