I've got a couple of aftermarket steering wheels I love: an old Alpina from the '70s and a DTM-style AMG from the '80s. Both were made by Momo. By now, the leather is starting to crack and some of the seams are loosening up.

I know I could replace them with something new, but they're both so cool! I'd like to salvage them if I could.

Is there a place I can send them to be refurbished or recovered? If the cost is much more than $150-200 or so, then it's probably not worth it. But I'd consider spending the money if I knew someone would do a good job.

If you find one, let us know. A local upholstery guy will not touch a steering wheel. Says he cannot make money at twice your suggested price.

Wheelskin is an option, but will not look exactly like new.

Although, you may get lucky since you still have the leather on them. They might be able to remove it and use it as a pattern for new leather.

Check your local auto upholstery shop.

You could also try to DIY it yourself:

CorsePerVita used to do it on the side, so he decided to share his tips and tricks with us:

Try these guys: redlinegoods.com

They don't have any aftermarket stuff, but they'd probably be able to work with you. Might be out of your price range though.

In a recent issue of another car magazine a restoration of a WSM GT is featured. Interior shot shows a nice looking replica wheel by Mike Lampert (lampertwheels.com). I've no experience or affiliation with Lampert. I've had good results with wheelskins.

I haven't heard any reviews lately but another source is Alan Gunn: http://www.aglausa.com His website is pretty awful, but he does restorations as well as selling do it yourself kits.

Might want to ask on the ImpalaSSforums. A few of those guys found a shop in Jersey that does it. I personally put my hands on a custom black/grey wheel that I honestly thought was a new factory wheel that had been dyed black on two sections.

I was using google to find a place that would reupholster my old Boxster steering wheel in suede, and I came across this:

www.craftcustoms.com 214-564-1170 519 E. Interstate 30, Suite 162 Rockwall, TX 75087

I have no idea what their work looks like, but I spoke with someone there and they definitely talk the talk. I'm going to send them my wheel. How badly can it go? Good luck to you, OP LanEvo

Also, second the Redline Goods suggestion. They are willing to do any custom-work as long as you send them measurements. If they can't/won't do it, then I'd be shocked.

There are some guys who do Mercedes AMG wheels, any way you want them, but be prepared its usually $500+. The real good guy is in Croatia I think.
