I just removed & replaced the bearing cassette on the right rear axle of my E36 track car.  I opened the cassette, which was still all sealed up nicely, and one of the bearings was missing.  Where the hell did it go?

I think I would drain the rear and run a Magnet down that Tube.  I don't know if it can end up Between the Ring and Pinion on those rears but they can on the ones I see.  Look At The Other Side.

Since the E36 has IRS, there isn't a tube for the bearing to go down from the cassette. Not sure where the bearing would have gone, maybe it broke apart?

Yea I had Solid axle on the mind. Might look at the other side to see if maybe it's a wear thing.

I have seen that before as well. I did the front bearing in my daughters Mazda 3 and took the old beating apart and it was missing one. I am betting manufacturing defect.

Maybe on purpose as it leaves extra room for lubricant as these are sealed units?

Maybe it was never there.

Is the separator/cage still present? If it's gone, it may appear there is a missing ball.

It's a puzzle, that's for sure.  Glad I replaced it before track season.
