I have a hypothetical build in my head that puts an engine under a vehicle normally known for being capable offroad. Has anyone done anything crazy along those lines? I know there are locost builders here, but I feel this is a little bit difference being that I'm starting with an existing chassis.
i've got a volvo i4 turbo in an s10 :)...
er anyway... this is GRM... weird engine swaps are the norm here. ;-)
I once had a two-stroke engine (and the disassembled motorcycle that it belonged to) in my bedroom.
I once put an engine in my pocket. (2 stroke R/C engine)
i once helped lift a fully assembled vw tdi into the rear hatch of a new beetle, the top half of one piston was no longer in its proper place so it turned out to be a parts engine though.
FZR 1000 engine on my kitchen table over the winter, great centerpiece

I put a BMC A-series engine in the back of a jeep wrangler.......it was just to get the lump home from the shop that built my engine.
I just put a SBC, a 12a Rotary, a 500cc Yamaha, and a Power Products 4 hp in the tack room on my parents farm. The horses will just have to put their crap somewhere else.
In the dishwasher........

My g/f cleaned and painted the engine for her Volvo 1800ES on an engine stand in her sunroom (plus the entire front suspension assembly).

Yeah, what's this "under" stuff? I once had an SBC in my sun room for a few months. Tex Racing Super T-10 on my living room table. Then I met Jane and it all went away.
In college, I parked my CB400F in my kitchen, because it was hard to start when it was cold.
LT1 from a '97 Fire Bird in the back of a Jeep Wrangler to and from the machine shop.
At least half a dozen Briggs & Strattons from 3.5 to 12 hp have been in dishwashers at just about every house I've lived in.

454 in the front of a 1965 VW BUG.
I'm looking less for being competitive and more an exercise in engineering. Built the way I'm thinking, it wouldn't be incredibly difficult to build, but I think it could be a really fun vehicle.
We rebuilt both of our t-10 trannies on the terrace of our room on the tenth floor of a Mariott.

I was gonna say, 'In the butt?' as a reference to this clip, but you chose the classier tactic. I doff my cap to you, good sir.

I mounted a datsun L24 in a dodge dakota front clip. The sheet metal for the adjacent firewall came from a off a freezer (sears goldstar upright.) The hood used to be the skin of a water heater.
