Background:

Miata suspension being grafted on to Volvo P1800.

Lower control arm is in place. Car is on ground at ride height with lower control arm parallel to the ground plane.

Need to establish where the upper shock mount goes in 3 dimensions.

The need for the shock/spring assembly to go though the upper a-arm and knowing the distance side to side of the shock centers is a good start for the x-y plane.

What I dont know is where on the Z axis to locate the mount. Should I just remove the spring and set the shock for half travel or is another ratio more approriate?

The Miata manual list a dimension from the ground, but without a Miata on a frame jig this wont help. Not even sure where the best place to measure from would be if I did have a Miata in the drive?

Half travel with the weight of the car on the spring is a safe bet. Don't panic, the offroad crowd has to make decisions like this every day.
