so im about to stuff a 700r4 in my 64 el camino next week.

only thing im still unsure of is what to do with the tv cables

I have two carb options for my 350:

a spread bore Holley 650 double pumper (currently on the truck) or an edelbrock 750 afb style carb (currently on my duster that's going efi this fall)

im willing to use either carb on the elky. either one will be a placeholder until I get the time and inclination to go efi. that should be in a few months, as I already have all the parts except for fuel pump.

anyway, which carb should I use, and what's the cheapest, most effective solution to getting the tv cable in and right? looking at summit and jegs, and googling, there are WAY too many options for me to know which one is right.

what should I use?

i know it's not one of your options, but a 70's quadrajet from a pickup with an early 80's baseplate (for the linkage arm where you hook everything up) and a throttle cable/tv cable bracket from an 80's 307 Olds powered car is the easy setup.. it sounds kind of convoluted, but that's the setup that i've got on the 305 in my Camaro right now...

this pic is from the 74 Monte i used to have that had a 700r4 swapped into it- and not actually the "proper" throttle arm- but it is the same 307 Olds throttle cable/tv cable bracket that i'm running in my Camaro. it bolts to the 2 rear carb bolts, and i've only seen it on 307 Oldsmobile powered cars in the junkyards:

the biggest problem is that only the 80's factory GM carbs have the linkage with the correct geometry for the tv cable- you can run a Holley or AFB style carb and it might work, but the tv cable won't get pulled the right amount for a given throttle input.. you might be able to use the 307 Olds tv cable bracket with the AFB since the bolt spacing is the same as a quadrajet, but like i said the geometry won't be right and the shifting might be a bit "goofy" sometimes and the trans might burn up.. also, you need a tv cable for a carbureted application- the TBI and TPI cables are different... there is a company that makes linkage adapters for different carbs that put the tv cable hookup in the proper place, but those are like $100 and i can't think of the name of the company right off hand..

a call to the Edelbrock tech department might be helpful- they might make the parts to hook that trans up to their AFB style carb, and a similar call to Holley might help with the other carb. but if my frankenstein quadrajet setup isn't an option for you, then i'd choose the Edelbrock over the Holley any day of the week..

i use the tv cable correction kits from summit racing for whatever carb i am running. i have used them on holleys with success and have an edelbrock one sitting here for when i put overdrive in the chevelle. i don't have a preference on either brand except that edelbrocks are easier to tune for a novice and holleys work for me because my uncle is a genius with them. i throw q-jets at whoever will take them.

the holley kit was an arm that bolts to the throttle arm with existing screw holes to place the tv linkage properly, and you buy the holley bracket that bolts to the carb mount holes to mount the cable into.
