Speaking from a owner/former owner position, these cars I own or have owned have been or were decent but not great cars;
'95 Mustang GT convertible, '99 Olds Intrigue (with the 3800, which started acting not at all good right at the end of ownership), '13 Suzuki SX4 Sportback (currently own).
Great cars I've owned is exactly one, the '88 Mazda 626 Turbo sedan. Sometimes I'm still interested in buying a five door version and then I remember the issues I had with the transmission in mine and they're not exactly young anymore.
There's a couple other cars I have owned but for various reasons I won't put them in either column. I kind of think my '73 Capri would be in the Great column but that car was so beat and rusty when I got it that it's really hard to say.

The lesser engined pony cars from gm and Ford are great cars, the only bad thing about them is they are also offered with pretty wicked V8s.
The Genesis coupe comes to mind.
Near and dear to my heart: 90s Escorts and Mazdas with the 1.8 BP are excellent fun... but will never be as "desirable" as even a base fuel sipper Civic from the same era.
In reply to Opti :
I own an 06 Mustang with the V6 engine and with its 205 horsepower it is very reminiscent of my sister's 67 V8 Mustang.
These cars are pretty easy to work on, lack a lot of the driver aids but don't have so much power that you hesitate to let your kids drive them. Stupidly, the weakest point on these Mustangs is the paint jobs. Apparently, the painters have problems painting aluminum hoods.
In my world...it doesnt get much better then these little bastards
Ford Falcon and Maverick. Chassis very much related to the Mustang, but the styling and trim levels let them down.
