If someone says M badge on a BMW that's demerits.
Full size american cars of the 80s all look awful on stock wheels. With fat circle track steelies, they suddenly look mean.
A lot of cars from the 70's look better with backdated bumpers. Here's a '74 US market Ford/Mercury Capri;
Here's a '72 Ford Capri RS3100, which can be emulated using the bumpers from the '73 and earlier Capri and cutting up the front bumper;
The paint and wheel change helps a lot but, for me, it all starts at the bumper.
The much much maligned Pontiac Aztek should never have been launched with black textured lower paneling. Once they smoothed it out and painted it body color, the vehicles didn't exactly look good, but they no longer looked comically bad. I honestly think that if they had launched that was from the stat it wouldn't have the undesirable reputation it has today.

Ford Mavericks can be made to look pretty nice.
The blue car looks nice, but a big part of that is that the green car has too many doors!
Invest $500 in a set of Kosei K1s or $600 in a set of Enkei RPF1s of the appropriate size. Bolt on. ANY car looks better.
Paint the black rockers on any ‘90s Honda product to match the body. Done.

That's one where I think it probably looks better with different wheels.

Still proud of this.
Mine: gmt400 trucks. Swap to late gmc grill, and hit it hard with the lowering stick. Instant awesome from old man.

They made a tent to hide the back end, all it needs is one for the front too...

I always wanted to do the treatment the blue car got to a 4 door. The shaved down wheelwells, lowered, small bumpers, Euro style mods and a powerful V8.
Then I got an actual BMW and the urge has subsided. ;)

I really think that if it were introduced now, it'd fit right in with the rest of the crossovers:
Maybe the same 5 spoke wheels in 19 or 20" to make it more modern. Or not:
