Yeah I never challenge payload but have always had to have a truck because of the bed. Whatever it is that's in the bed it's either too bulky or I just don't want it inside the vehicle. So you could imagine why I started getting cranky when I had to get 17MPG everywhere I went around town because they stopped making the trucks that got 30mpg.

I can't believe I didn't get any photos but I towed a Uhaul 4x8 enclosed trailer 1480 miles with my hybrid Maverick.

Here is the route we took:

Day 1: Tampa area to Mobile, AL

Day 2: Mobile, AL to Shreveport, LA

Day 3: Shreveport, LA to Wichita Falls, TX

Day 4: Wichita Falls, TX to Clovis, NM

Total distance: 1483 miles

Avg fuel mileage: ~21mpg or so

 

The Uhaul trailer weighs 850lbs empty and it was loaded about 80% full. I estimate there was 600-700lbs of stuff in the trailer. Total trailer weight was probably around 1500-1600lbs.

The hybrid Maverick has only a 2000lb tow rating but there were also 2 adults, 2 spoiled cats, suitcases and some crap in the bed. I was probably close to the GVWR.

Anyways, the Mav towed great. I didn't order it with the factory tow hitch so I added an aftermarket hitch and wiring. There was nary a wiggle from the trailer the entire trip despite some pretty nasty head and cross winds on Day 3 through west Texas. You could tell the trailer was there but I never felt like the Maverick struggled. I saw the lowest MPG of 6.2 MPG but that was pulling hills with a strong headwind in the Texas hill country. Most of the time the MPG was north of 20 MPG. I never went faster than 61 MPH out of fear of the trailer blowing a tire (a not so fun previous experience).

The only issue I had was the small tank size on the hybrid. It's supposedly only holds 13.9 US gallons but I would fill up when it hit a quarter tank. I'd get about 250 miles between fill ups which isn't terrible.

I bought a Airlift 1000 airbags before we left to prevent sagging and porpoising but didn't have time to install them. The Mav sagged maybe 3/4" with the trailer loaded and had little to zero porpoising. I feel like they weren't needed.

I wouldn't tow a car on a trailer but the hybrid Maverick worked great for my use.

I worked in a NOC in Tampa but wanted to be more hands on so I found a field technician job at the base in Clovis. This new job is closer to what I did when I was active duty (3D172). I start next Monday smiley.

For those who bought Maverick hybrids.. how have they been holding up? Are you happy or regretting the purchase?

I'm brainstorming Maverick hybrids but I only drive about 20 miles per day (when I don't WFH) so also brainstorming plug-in hybrids like the Prius. Also brainstorming the AWD turbo version (also because I only drive about 20 miles per day.. and I don't drive that many days).

A plug in variant would be nice for the Maverick but it will probably be a few years before they can make any major additions or changes to the platform due to building constraints.

Got a call from the dealership telling me to get ready. Says it should be here April 15 or earlier. Most interesting thing for those out their waiting is that he said a ton of them are coming in all at once. So if you're waiting it may not be long.

Truck came Thursday! Took it on a 350mi road trip Saturday. First impressions:

1. Hybrid system is kind of fun. Dealership was trying out the remote start through the FordPass app and I was standing outside of it like "It's still not starting" while they were working with it. They were like "It did! You just won't hear it start until you start going or cranking the A/C" Oh duh.

2. Way torquier than something with just under 200hp should be. Say for passing -- the hybrid really gives it a boost but of course you now have two different torque peaks.

3. The Knob. Kinda don't like the shift knob but would I rather have a column shifter like most trucks? No. Just the way the dash is laid out a floor shifter would be in the way somewhat.

4. Reversing noise in electric mode is kind of passive-aggressive! I like it. Was at a rest area parked next to no one on each side. Come out and these people in an SUV parked right next to me when they didn't have to and are berkeleying around with their dogs through their back side door for minutes keeping me from leaving. Put it in reverse and beep beep beep the entire time almost like a box van or something. It's not the same beep though.

5. Not used to front-drive trucks. Last drivers were a split between a 10th Gen Civic and a 1st Gen Colorado 4cyl 2wd regular cab. It's about 200 pounds heavier than the Colorado but 900 more than the Civic. I don't notice it that much until I'm in the middle of a mid-speed corner then it picks up what feels like a push. Then you add steering and it corrects itself before corner exit but you felt like you had to jerk it a little. I think it's just the weight catching up with a FWD truck very quickly. You do not have to be braking to feel the sensation. Ridgeline owners: have you felt this? Those weigh even more.

6. People were saying that the speakers were crappy until they broke in but I think they are fine? I forget what people were saying, something like 20 hours I think. I'm a musician that has done some recording and I usually know when I hear something I don't like but I didn't get the bad speakers vibe. They might have been talking about earlier than 2024 models. The speaker placement/aiming is also quite good. Sometimes companies will change a part number or supplier without telling anyone -- especially Ford. Mine is an XLT. We'll see if I like them even better with twice the hours on them.

7. I was hoping the trunk under the rear seat would be bigger. Say big enough to fit a 1/5 scale R/C dirt oval Late Model with the body on inside but the 12V battery is in there and it's not that deep anyway.

8. Did anyone else's truck come with a 2-wire pigtail in a bag in the glove compartment? Haven't looked into what it's for yet.

9. Glad the hitch receiver is covered in some kind of rubberized coating so that it doesn't rust in a year.

10. Wouldn't mind steering wheel radio controls.

11. Actually smells like a new car inside. Have bought 3 Hondas in the past 6 years and none of them smelled like new cars should. Apparently buyers in China don't like traditional new car smell.

Very happy so far. Was nice to thin the herd by trading in two vehicles!

The pigtail in my glovebox is for a trailer brake controller, not a Maverick, an old Armada.

That pigtail is for the 12V drops in the bed so you can add accessories.

Has anyone heard any plans for making a hybrid AWD version yet?

I can't be the only thinking this would get a few people out of their hybrid RAV4s.

Yeah, the hybrid is silent at startup except for the high speed fan that kicks on for the A/C evaporator. It was super weird to turn the key to start and not have it "start" the first few times. If the high voltage (hybrid) battery is below about 34%, the gas engine will kick on.

The shifter knob is a love it or hate it affair. I previously had a Ram 1500 that had the shifter knob on the dash but the Maverick's knob is different. The Mav knob doesn't have stops at the end of travel so it spins infinitely. I wish it had hard stops like my Ram did. Also the gear detentes could be more pronounced. Those are my only two gripes about the knob. 

Like Tom said, the two wire pigtail is for 12v accessories in the bed. Look for a small rectangular cover near the end of the bed by the tailgate. Under those covers you will find a round connector. I have an LED light hooked up to mine to provide lighting under my tonneau cover. 

One word of caution about the Ford Pass app: The truck has built in wifi and a 4g cell modem. The wifi module continuously scans the network for you phone and will run the 12v battery down if the truck isn't driven for a few days. It happened to me twice. I turned off the truck wifi and over the air updates then deleted the Ford Pass app. I then reset the Battery Management System (BMS). The procedure is in the owners manual. I haven't had any issues after I did that. 

If you need/want remote start, a company called Start-x makes a remote start module the plugs into the factory harness under the drivers side dash. It uses the factory key fob for remote start. It's super easy to install and works great.

Make sure your rear seat is latched all the way. Mine wasn't and made tons of noise. I had to slam it pretty hard to get the seat back to latch to the rear wall.

So it turns out, through Dana's work, we have X plan access. But there doesn't seem to be a way to punch that into the configuration thing.

A 7 year note with an $8k down payment gets us to $350 a month. That seems extreme. Especially for basemodel with AWD, spray in bed liner, and tow package being the only options. Granted that's without a credit check being run so the default 7% apr. 

Have any of you guys bought one through X plan? Was there a substantial savings?

We're doing a lot of cross shopping with this and the Hyundai Santa Cruz because they really would be the best vehicle for us if we went down to a single vehicle household or I just kept a beater around.

I did x plan through Mustang Club of America when I got my '23 maverick. I think I saved a few hundred bucks (I paid cash), but the bigger thing is it standardizes the dealer fees (or something like that, my memory is foggy)

 

You need to reach out and get a PIN for it and then you work with the dealer (provided they accept Xplan).  You should get the below (except with your PIN and name where I have mine blacked out) back from your contact.

Point #6; break-in period for speakers?  Is that a real thing for speakers in general?  That's a new one for me. 

I used the X Plan through Disabled American Veterans (DAV). While it does give a small discount, it limits the dealer fees to $100.

Which is why I used it. It was a planned, strategic decision. I knew the larger dealers would get a larger Maverick allotment than a smaller dealer. So I ordered through my local mega dealer in Florida (Brandon Ford). That Ford dealer has a ridiculous $1,295 dealer fee:

Using the X-plan, it limited them to charging $100. It's worth it if your dealer charges anything more than $100.

Yes reading through the sheet at the end there's almost $2k in dealer fees tacked on. And of course the only one they have in stock is fully loaded at $40k.

That is a substantial savings though for what amounts to be paperwork. Thank you.

Thanks for the advice. I went though the steps to diable the FordPass except the battery reset which will happen tonight (the instructions are basically no moleste for 8 hours). Most apps do something fishy on the side and it sounds like that's the case here. I may have mentioned upthread about being interested in the keyless entry keypad option that went dealer-installed for 2024. That appointment is Thursday. I suppose that will replace some of the functions of FordPass.

12. Can't these backup cameras look a little better by now? It still looks like a worn-out VHS tape like my 2016 Civic's did. I think the field of view is better but it still looks like it was used to record soap operas over and over.

Very real and huge with specific speakers like guitar speakers.

 

Brand new speakers lack midrange and are "spikey"( lots o treble). Once the surround moves a bit a loosens up it gains midrange and loses treble.
